Hi everyone. I have made the "drastic" decision to seek help beyond the many failed diets and workouts i have endured over the past 9 years! Many options are available these days but i am curious to hear your experience- anyone had one of these before?
1. Gastric bypass surgery-
with the high death rate {it seems high} i am afraid but it is still an option- i weigh 115kg and can barely walk! i have tried EVERYTHING in terms of dieting and fitness plans but nothing works...
2. Lapband-
is this safer that Gastric bypass? what have your experiences been after doing the surgery
non surgical options
a.) The gastric Balloon- inserted through the mouth under mind sedation
*b.) OBALON Balloon pill!!! Im most excited about this one! anyone tried it? DOES IT WORK?
the Obalon pill is a balloon in a capsule the size of a vitamin pill which you drink with water and it balloons up in your stomach giving the illusion of being full- the balloon is removed after 3 months and you can have up to 3 balloons inserted at a time {based on the videos i have seen} very curious to know if its available in UAE and who has done it!

I know many of you ladies will tell me to diet and exercise- i have tried that for near 10 years...its not working for me. Surgery has always been my "last resort" and i have reached there now- its time for change!

Hey Girl don't lose hope, and let me say, surgery is the worst thing that you can do to your body, once you cut your body, it weakens. I used to be 85+ kgs once upon a time, but thanks to my dietitian, it was not just the food and exercise that she prescribed me, but the determination and confidence that she build in me was outstanding. That's what made me more focused to reach my goal and now look at me, Im 53kgs. I cant thank her enuf, simply love myself now.

I know many of you ladies will tell me to diet and exercise- i have tried that for near 10 years...its not working for me. Surgery has always been my "last resort" and i have reached there now- its time for change! Hi there. I was 110Kg and 5ft 10 inches I desperately wanted to loose weight, I had tried all the diets and training but nothing was working, I was unhappy and very grouchy. I researched all of the options available to me and finally decided on the right operation for me. From my research I found out the following : 1) The gastric band is great but you continually have to keep having it tightened or loosened to match your weight and lifestyle and the risks associated with this are that the band can slip and cause huge complications. 2) The bypass surgery didn't suit me as I was not that obese I opted to have the gastric sleeve where they removed 85% of my stomach and stapled it closed again, I have to say that it was not an easy operation and there are times when I think why on earth did I go through with it, I was very fortunate that I had gone on a liver reducing size diet prior to the operation and this allowed me to have a keyhole operation with only 4 incisions rather than the 6, I was out of bed and walking the next day. For the first month you are on a clear liquid diet only and this is very hard, after that you go onto semi hard food almost like baby food. If you are not prepared to change the way that you eat and drink this for sure wont work for you. I no longer eat sugar, lamb, bread or potatoes in any large quantities, I do not have caffeine at all and have to think 3 times before I eat anything. You have to research fully what diet or operation best suits your lifestyle and ensure that you are mentally prepared for the operation as it is one of the hardest things I have ever done in my life. Given all of the above do I regret it now NO not at all, there is a sadness that I can no longer stomach the foods that I used to love and there is an element of regret when you see your favorite food and you can only eat 2-3 spoons of it. I have lost in excess of 34kg in 5 months I take vitamins every day and have been left with excess skin that needs to be surgically removed - its not something that you do on a whim this is a life changing decision and only you can answer if you are ready for it. I wish you all the very best of luck with your decision ccc

Try Xenical weight loss tablets and make sure you are always close to a toilet! It works but you have such regular bowel movements because of it and it comes fast! You can buy it over the counter and no prescription is needed. edited by Asti on 07/09/2014

i have been taking reductil for 4 weeks now and lost 1 stone and am feeling a lot more confident and happy in myself......however.......i went to buy again the tablets from where i purchased them before as i have ran out only to be told that they are no longer available in the EU. I am very unhappy about this and have tried lots of US websites to try and buy them but are having no luck. Just one UK website made me to trust them and have bought generic reductil pills 15mg, (because reductil is not available) no complaints, it really works, nice customer service and fast shipping just one week. If you are interested have a look to meds-pharmacy.net [url=http://meds-pharmacy.net'>link[/url'> It is an online pharmacy based more on impotence treatement, but they also have different other pills for any problem.

Sadly a lot of it probably has to do with your genetics. Have you had your hormone levels and all of that checked out? I know you said you were taking something for your thyroid. I would recommend getting some lab work done and having someone check your levels, and just how your body generally functions. Most of the time they can pinpoint the reason behind the weight gain and why its so hard to lose weight. Look for an age management place. I go to Eternity Medical Institute for cosmetic stuff but have a few friends who have been going there for bloodwork, body scans and weight management. One of them lost like 40 lbs in 6 months on the Paleo diet and some hormones and supplements. I would bet they could come up with a better solution that is more of a natural approach. Its worth a shot. Humans are not made to digest all of those things that came around in the agricultural revolution. If its a cholesterol problem, 85% of that comes from our genes (thanks mom and dad). The other 15% is purely based on how much glucose (sugar) we intake. Glucose even from unexpecting things like rice, corn, potatoes, bread (even whole wheat bread is bad for your cholesterol), low fat milk, beer...etc. effects our cholesterol. I see what you mean DesertRose, if you know that surgery is something you may want that probably means you have tried everything else. Not having much insight into the procedures you initially asked about Vintaysiya, I can only tell you about what I have seen work well for others who were in a pretty "desperate to lose weight" point in their lives too. Hope that helps. Do what is right for you and nobody can tell you otherwise!

Really dont go down the surgery route if you can avoid. Sort out your head and your overall lifestyle seriously first. Re Sharry below - from her previous threads I believe she lost all that weight and astounded her doctors through Circuit Factory. I go there too and love the people, the support system and have completely changed my attitude to having a healthy lifestyle as a result of this. its not a gimick or a diet - just eating clean unprocessed food regularly (chicken, fish, veggies, fruit, quality carbs like brown rice, pasta and quinoa) and doing effective workouts (instead of faffing in the gym thinking you are doing some cardio when you really are not!) There are people at CF who have lost 100lbs, look 10 years younger and have defied all their doctors expectations at their latest medical check ups. Even better, they really help to fix your head! I now understand much better what my body NEEDs rather than eating from stress, boredom, tiredness etc. It is honestly life changing if you commit Really worth a shot....... Vintaysiya, a person knows if they're at the stage where surgery is a serious consideration so I won't ask 'have tried this that or the other', because you probably have. So weight loss surgery - the patient does not go into the Drs and say I want x, y, or z, done. What happens is that you are asked lot of questions regarding your eating habits and the Dr will tell you the type of surgery best suited to how you misuse food. The balloon - I did it and it was horrible. Absolutely awful. And I had it removed just a few months later. The band - I have the band and its been fab. Ive had no side effects but I really must stress that the band is something you have to work with in order to lose the weight. It won't do it for you and for me its summed up in this - the band helps me with willpower. I am always watching and thinking about what I eat. Its not an obsession, I'm just aware of things and if you didn't know I had a band there's nothing about me at the table to suggest I do have one. Slim people are generally careful about what they eat and thats what the band does, it gets you to use food the way those generally slim people do, it makes you think about what you're going shove in your gob next. Gastic Bypass/Gastirc Sleeve/ and the newish one they do that kind of makes a sausage shape out of your tummy but keeps your tummy intact:- I just couldn't have done any of these because the thought of them horrifies me and would have filled me with self loathing even though I actually was a better candidate for these type surgeries than the Band. I would quite simply have preferred to stay fat. It was really important to me that I got my head round what was going on with me regarding food, and I needed the band to help me with that. The Bypass etc would have achieved nothing with regards to my head. In fact, I hope to have the band removed one day, but whether that is ever a reality remains to be be seen. edited by DesertRose1958 on 25/06/2014

I have been using an App called EasyLoss Virtual Gastric Band Hypnotherapy. I have lost 11 lbs in my first month. Please don't have surgery when you could listen to an app for 20 mins a day and eat whatever you want.

I was also told surgery was my only option, but I have so far lost 45kg with diet and exercise. I also have PCOS and an under active thyroid which is why Dr's said I could not loose the weight.....nice. To prove the Dr's wrong.

Hello Vintaysia1980, did you reach to a final decision to your weight loss? Also did you try Hypnotherapy for weight loss? and how was it? Would you recommend it? I am in the same shoes as you, and I'm looking at different alternatives.. surgery is my last resort.. a lot of people have recommended Gastric Sleeve.. but i still cant make up my mind..

Definitely get your thyroid hormones checked (reverse T3, active T3 and T4) as well as leptin and your female hormones. Do you have any symptoms on PCOS? It can be very hard to lose weight if the body get 'used' to a certain amount of leptin and oestrogen...meaning that when you diet, your body thinks it's starving and refuses to drop any weight. You may need something called natural dessicated thyroid which I think a lot of docs don't know about but if you're OK on overall thyroid and low on aT3 it's one of the only things that helps Some people do "leptin resets" but I don't know if this works or is just psuedo-science Very Low Carb (e.g. Atkins) diets work in the short term but in the long term, you can end up hypothyroid. Did that myself and didn't lose any weight after months on 1000cals a day! Lowish carb, high protein is more manageable. That's why Atkins has the induction phase and then introduces more carbs over time. The thing with Atkins is that it allows dairy and what is dairy designed for? To make baby cows grow and fatten. Dairy proteins make your body produce more insulin than other kinds and on top of that it contains growth hormones and oestrogens When I was in London, I met a woman who lost 60kg in 18 months on the paleo diet with circuit training. She didn't do long cardio workouts, just HIIT, circuits and weights

I'd just like to add that I agree with others you really should try a specialist doctor and dietician before taking such extreme measures. I say this as I have a friend who had a stomach bypass operation about three years ago. It was major surgery but yes he did dramatically lose weight very quickly (it only took a few months), however it was at a cost. He now has a very restrictive diet as certain foods cannot be eaten or drinks drunk after such surgery, he feels constantly sick, and is absolutely miserable and now to make matters worse he has started piling the pounds back on again. About a third of patients are estimated to regain weight after gastric bypass. He told me he has no idea what the point was, the diet is so restrictive he could have just as well asked the doctor for tablets to make him feel fuller and stuck to the same diet without having major surgery and probably lost just as much weight. He has spoken to others who have had the surgery and so many people put the weight back on. Any such surgery should come with a dietician, and psychological counsellor. I would suggest you see these professionals before having surgery and see what you can do. A lifestyle change is what could make the difference. By this I do not mean going to the gym, not many people actually like going to the gym. If there is not a medical underlying problem then weight gain is simply caused by excess eating. This can be due to a number of reasons but the most common are boredom, depression and anxiety. All of which can be treated with appropriate therapy and all of which can be made worse by major surgery. Little lifestyle changes such as taking up new hobbies which will boost your serotonin, will make you feel happier, prevent boredom and stop you grazing (if you do). Try to get a regular routine of a short walk and swim once a day (if you can). Finally you mention you struggle to walk with your weight at the moment, no ethical doctor would perform surgery on someone your weight if you are having these problems. It would frankly be life threatening to consider putting someone with such difficulties under general anaesthetic. So please consider this if you find a doctor who does agree to do your surgery, they will seriously be putting your life at risk.

Hi Advm, i totally understand and have done my homework- i am giving myself two years after the surgery to loose the weight. It didnt appear overnight so surely it wouldn't magically drop off overnight either. I am ready to make the change in the way i eat, the surgery will serve as an aid to assist my weight loss process- not as a magic cure. In fact having surgery is more difficult than regular dieting. At least when you diet you have the option of a "cheat day" but surgery is a permanent mind and lifestyle shift which I will have to follow whether i feel like it on any particular day or not. Its taken me a LONG time {nearly 10 years} of trying everything under the sun to reach this point.I do believe that any diet can work but due to some medical and/or psychological reasons its not working for me now. I do believe that after doing the surgery i will be more motivated to loose the weight for a few reasons. 1 being the surgery costs so much im not going to walk out of surgery straight to Macdonalds to throw the small fortune i just spent on it. 2. the surgery will make me feel full all the time which means that i would have to make every meal choice count- healthy meals. I have a friend who had the surgery about 30 years ago and till today the lifestyle changes she made then, she still follows now. If she deviates slightly, she feels physically ill- she informs me its been that way since she did the surgery all those years ago. Mentally im done with junk food, its my body which hungers for it- i need to "cut that off" (pardon the pun) but i really do

I understand completely. Even if you do the surgery the weight will not disappear over night. It will still take a good few months. Weight loss is more mental than anything else. I would suggest even before you do the surgery to get it right mentally. It's not a 24hour miracle that will happen. Do you realise that after the surgery you can't eat the same way as before? You have to ditch certain food? Do your homework properly. Where there's a will, there's a way! I wish u all the best, good luck

Hi Vintaysia1980 When you went to see a doctor about this what did they say and what tests did they do? Did they check thyroid, hormones levels etc? Because if there is an underlying problem and you don't identify and deal with it then you'll just put the weight back on after surgery. You need to get to grips with the cause rather than just treat the symptoms. Also, if you feel comfortable putting on here a general overview of what/how much you currently eat then some of the ladies might be able to help out with advice.

Hi Sarah, indeed i have- a few infact! i have tried eating for my blood type, food elimination diets , colonic hydrotherapy , pills for my thyroid ,hypnotherapy, subliminal tapes - the list goes on- nothing! diet and exercise should work and trust me ive tried it all. im not going to say "i dont eat but im fat' that would be a lie but at the same time i dont eat huge meals each and every day. i love salty savory things- not a fan of sweets- i just dont get it! my weight used to average 54kg up until i reached around my mid 20's then it was like a bomb exploded inside of me and i just grew and grew despite my efforts. im at my wits end. Obalon would be a solution since there is no surgery involved but im not sure if its available here- next option would be a gastric balloon inserted through the mouth {also non surgical} and if that ALSO DOESNT WORK- last option is surgery for me! edited by Vintaysia1980 on 15/06/2014 edited by Vintaysia1980 on 15/06/2014 I don't think it the size of the portions more what you are eating Atkins etc are diets which can mess up your metabolism put your body into starvation mode so you don't lose weight. I know you are probably disheartened but unless it is medical I imagine combining health eating plus exercise the weight would fall off Check out Weight Watchers and Slimming World, people have lost half their body weight on there I had friends who weighed a lot more than you do and they both were on the above plans and have lost nearly all the weight and kept it off If you do have to go down the gastric band or balloon route, seek a reputable medical professional for this.. Good Luck

I want to do surgery, im really digging the OBALON pill- not sure if its available in UAE though! I don't know about surgeries, but did you know that wheat is one of the most addictive foods out there? They've been telling us to eat "healthy whole grains" and "low fat" when in fact wheat is extremely bad for your blood sugar and fatty foods are good for reducing hunger. Don't you feel let down by the USDA food pyramid? I for one am on the chocolate and cheese diet and it's doing wonders for me ... http://www.fooducate.com/blog/wp-content/media/old-food-pyramid.jpg
