I've previously used First Lady but they're too expensive to buy many...I've seen lots of women wearing a style recently which is ruched at the spine, really pretty. Any ideas on which tailors are good and use high quality fabric, or which shops have a good selection at reasonable prices (as in 100s not 1000s)...

Thanks :)

Thanks Wickedangel_78 :) Which fabric should I request if I want matte/opaque (not satin) but quite light/floaty? Nada is a fine flowing material, they work with different kind of Nada or you can say that,it comes in different kind of qualities.but i prefer that.it has little shine i n it. other wise crape is good as it is opaque. best of luck to find a good abaya

There is also Abu Hail centre in Diera & they have Abayas with all price ranges. My friends shop from there. You need to know what you want & describe it well to the taylor. They have ready made ones but it's better if you have a design or a ready made abaya with you for them to copy & make the exact size.

I go to a taylor in Souq Al Bahar in Sharjah. I paid AED 250 for a lovely one (suitable for a party) with sheela & it's similar to one I saw at 1st Lady (AED 1200). For a simple one I paid AED 150. There are several taylors there & they have all types of materials like Salona, stretch, etc. He finishes it in 2-3 days. Where is this Sook al Bahar? It's close to banks street (behind it) Sharjah-Ajman road. It's the old souq in Sharjah. It's an open souq

Sorry VP if I came across as snappy, was having a bad day lol! Thanks for all the suggestions to those who gave them, I'll check them all out. Went to MOE today but the prices are crazy, and for rubbish fabric in lots of places too! Ref the question about forsaking identity for new Arab culture etc. etc. - no, I don't feel that way, and yes some women give you 'pitying' looks but I don't really care TBH. My DH would laugh if you accused him of being oppressive - he'd have no chance and he's well aware of that! I wear abaya to family-in-law visits and functions, as a sign of respect to their culture and traditions, just as they do little things like bake me victoria sponges (yum!) to make me feel at home :) Even if I'm not wearing an abaya I dress modestly (i.e. no mini skirts or booty shorts!) but I always have done. I try not to judge others (though I'm extremely sarcy so that takes will power for me lol) and hope others do the same for me.

Its so odd and I can't explain why, but I find it strange when I see a westerner in an Abaya. I know, I shouldn't, but I immediatly assume she has forsaken everything western for her new arab life. I know its wrong-why does this pop into my head? Logically, anyone should be able to wear whatever they want. Western ladies in an abaya-do you find that you fall victim to this stereotype? There are plenty who are of this type. It used to be the case. Nowadays it has changed a lot. I have heard comments from modern European women regarding those who are married to Arabs, that they should 'watch out' or they will be covered from head to toe in black soon! One was even from an EW staff member at one of the functions. She thought it was a hilarious comment. I thought she was living in the dark ages. I have a friend who wears her black 'outfit' as a sign of prestige, as she is neither Arab nor religious. Hey ho, it is her choice. [b'>But she thinks people will treat her better if they know her DH is local.[/b'> What do you think of that? It rubs me the wrong way for some reason. she has assumed this mental image and is adhering to it. She might be having delusions of grandeur.....she could have been in the sun too long.....but for some reason she is turned her back on her roots, and they were not grand, believe me.

Get the sterotype that i MUST be married to a local and forced to wear this, as thou i have no free will of my own.... I wear an abaya to work as i can wear trakky bums and a tee underneath and dont' have to worry about wearing business clothes and hijab :D Maybe its because for so long in the West, we have been associating the abaya, hijab, etc...with oppression? Although, I know thats not the case. Many women choose it, some feel pressured to by family.

Apologies VeroPossumus, I suppose we can add abayas to maids, schools, driving complaints, weight loss, hair salons, weather, 'where to buy xxx' and all the other topics which repeatedly crop up. My mistake. Thanks Wbusy, it really doesn't matter i'll just go out and look myself. I need several, just for general usage. Thanks sorry,...I did not mean it like that. Do you see how people can read a post as being "rude" when in fact that was not the intent? As you well know, you have accused me of being rude, when in fact it wasn't my intent. Just saying.............. If it was not your intent, then why did you not apologise to me? I have only accused you of being rude when you were. Just sain'

Khunji in Wafi Mall will tailor one to fit you perfectly in any cut you want for around 300-400. The material they use is brilliant. Always full of locals. ETA I've had a good close up look at the ones in Splash and they're really quite tacky :( also the material is cheap and they don't look like they'll last. Not worth 300 at all. No offense anon, maybe you just didn't see them properly, or as they say different strokes for different folks :) edited by dairylea on 23/04/2011 I said they were fairly nice, not 100% nice. I did not buy one for myself for the reason you stated. They are still better quality than the ones you find at Carrefour and seem well-suited for the occasional abaya-wearer.

hmmm will see if I can drag DD in then, perhaps under the guise of buying some perfume....since she is a Hanayen girl, she may not come into Splash without a song & dance. Give it a try.

Saw a bunch of very cool and attractive looking ones in Dubai Mall yesterday, nice shape, very modern and attractive they were reasonably priced as well, right next to geleeto - has a green abaya in the window. Good luck! Abu Hail Center in Deira will have a massive selection, and don't forget to haggle.

I don't wear abaya GA, but my mother in law says the stores in AD carry a wider selection for far better prices thanin Dubai. I did just buy a shayla for 100 dhs in the ground floor arabic clothing area at Dubai Mall at Geleeto which had a more toned down (less blingy) styles for around 500. Also, I have seen very good quality ready made abaya in stores that also do tailoring if you want to create your own near where all the fabric stores are near the gold souk. There are also some along the Beach Rd, one across and down a bit from Arz Lebanon. Vero is right though, if you do a search you should find loads of more information. Is this for a special occasion or do you just need a new one? I've previously used First Lady but they're too expensive to buy many...I've seen lots of women wearing a style recently which is ruched at the spine, really pretty. Any ideas on which tailors are good and for far better use high quality fabric, or which shops have a good selection at reasonable prices (as in 100s not 1000s)... Thanks :)
