Hi.

I'm getting married back in England next year and was wondering if anyone knows if I can reclaim the VAT? I've done this for other items and goods but don't know if I can for the wedding venue/flowers/photographer etc etc.

Thanks!

Edna.welthorpe is correct, you can't reclaim VAT on services. However, if you buy eg, your wedding dress in the UK and then bring it with you to the UAE (mind the timeframe for export for goods, not sure how many months you have...) with the correct forms filled out, then you would be able to claim back the VAT on it. Same is true for all goods that you purchased (groom's suit, wedding band etc.)...

If you have your own company and pay VAT via that then you would be able to get away with it

I was at the Customs desk in Heathrow recently to process some receipts for VAT refund and the information there clearly stated that VAT refunds apply to good only, not services.

I'm not a VAT specialist, but I would have thought that the answer is probably "no". The reason you can claim VAT back on goods is because you are a non-resident of the EU and you are undertaking to export those goods permanently outside the EU. In other words, you're getting the majority of the actual benefit of the items you've bought while living outside the EU. As far as I know, VAT exemption for non-EU residents *only* applies to the purchase of retail goods, not of services, and even then you can only buy from certain shops that are members of the tax refund scheme and you have to get those forms filled out at the time of purchase. If you buy a service in the UK, be it a wedding venue or a wedding photographer, you're getting all of the benefit while in the UK. You can only use the venue while you're actually in the UK, after all - it's not as if you can take it with you and continue to use it while in Dubai :) Similarly, while you may continue to make use of the photographer's services when back in Dubai (selecting the photos etc), the primary service he provides is being at the venue on the day taking those photos.

Dont think you can reclaim VAT on services and goods you use in the UK. To reclaim VAT as a non resident you have to be taking the goods out of the UK with you.
