Do know where is a good place to look. Carrefour clothing section. Mine has a field day in there and its reasonable too. can pick most of it up in there. Sorry if some of u buy more designer but im not going that route.
Thanks for the tip. I found some undies and the t-shirts at C4 the last time. Lulu is also a good option. Not going to be buying her any Mango or Zara anytime soon!
And Splash is also quite good value.

Lulu is really expensive. You're better off getting her stuff at Splash!
No one can make you feel guilty unless you decide to let them. If you are comfortable answering yes to "do I pay her a competitive/market wage? Does she get what her embassy requires? Am I (MYSELF) comfortable with her compensation? Then you have nothing to feel badly about.
To be honest. I'm constantly surprised by the various problems/intriques/song and dances so many seem to go through (I"ve lived in the GCC for 10+ years). Have I had issues? Yes. But have found if I am up front and give reminders on a regular basis as to what I want or expect, I generally get what I want/have paid for. I also take the perspective that if I am worthy of a raise/bonus etc, so is my employee (if she is performing well).
However, I have taken criticism for the latter - if she gets a raise the rest will "expect" one too.,what?

Thanks for the responses. I guess she needs some warm clothing for the winter so I will get some sweaters in a few days. Already told her to give me the numbers of the maids whose madams supply everything and her response was that she does not have them? hmm... i get the gist here! Anyway I will let her know that I am also not responsible for her entire wardrobe but will only give her some warm clothing once. thanks EW... i guess these ladies love taking us on guilt trips!
I think a uniform looks smarter or some leggings and a plain tshirt. also easier to work in. they are going to spill bleach on them etc so dont buy anything expensive.
I buy everything for the maid, her clothes and toiletries, but she does not ask for them. Also her food is provided by us.
Is that because you pay her a pittance or she has bad dress sense?neither.

Same here when I had a maid. From my understanding, that is the employer's responsibility.
Jeans and Tshirts I buy. The rest is her department :)
Except for the nicked slippers from hotels, which she loves pottering around the house in, which are also supplied from my travels :D

The minute a maid starts talking with sentences like "all the other madams" I do not want to continue the conversation. This " but the other madams do this and that" thing does not work in our household, I will not be sent on a guilt trip but then our maid does not try it on us anyway.
When our maid arrived she had just a small bag and very little clothing. We took her clothes shopping and have also bought her cold weather clothes like cardigans and fleeces and give some for special occasions. And w ebought her comfortable clothes for working - not a uniform.
You could buy her something for the cold weather, the are not that expensive - but you should not feel obliged to do anything - especially when the maid starts references to other madams.
I think they don't bring anything here in the hope that we will buy them a whole closet. THat's what mine did anyway. She did not even have proper shoes to walk in the mall. THe other day I noticed she was walking outside with barely no warm sweaters and I told her I gave her all my fleece last year and don't have anything more so I gave her 2 of my thick cotton jumpers that I am not wearing anymore. (She had shipped everything last year to the Philipines). Today, surprise, she came out of her room with a fleece sweater she had been given by a relative...I gave her some things I don't wear anymore and will help her if she really has nothing but that's it! She does go shopping for herself anyway
No, I don't know anyone who buys all their maid's clothing! I do know people who pass on masses of clothes which their maids use, sell or send home. I don't know anyone who has a maid who has to wear a uniform. In my experience, buying all clothes for a maid is not the standard ( but may be for all those little lasses you see wandering about in the malls with jim jam style clothing on!)
I don't buy clothes for our housemaid but maybe if you took your girl on and provided her clothes then perhaps she thought this was the normal thing. I know very few people who buy their housemaids clothing and would be very surprised if all her friends have their clothes bought for them - unless they are provided with a work uniform.
Is your maid Indonesian by any chance? My previous Indonesian maid also arrived with a very small bag as I believe she had to wear uniform in her previous employment. I did buy some stuff for her to wear when she first arrived but not after that. She gave me money if she wanted me to buy any clothes for her and if the item I chose cost more than what she gave, I would add my money. She shopped so much during her employment that by the time we sent her home, I had to give her my old suitcases. She actually expected me to buy her a new one like her previous Saudi employer did for her. But again, she was also shocked that we didnt take her with us when we travel abroad.
It was good of you to buy her the basics, but usually clothing is limited to uniforms. Her personal wardrobe is her responsibility. However, she may be in a bad place financially and can't afford clothes. Ask her what's up. Are you buying her personal hygiene items, soap, shampoo, etc? I know some people do this, but in all my years of having domestic help, have only done this when I needed to insist on the person bathing with soap and washing their clothes regularly.
I agree with magicbeanza. No, I don't buy any of my maid's clothing - she is responsible for that. We do, however, pay quite a bit more each month than the minimum stipulated for a Filipina housemaid here (about 2400 per month including food). And usually for birthday and Christmas some form of clothing is included in her gifts.
Personally I think you are being taken for a ride. I don't buy my maid any clothes unless it is as a birthday/christmas present.
Having said that though it also depends what you pay your maid and what freedoms you give her. IF you only pay her say Dhs800 per month and don't allow her to go out without you then I would say you are responsible for clothing her.
But if you pay your maid Dhs2500 and she has the weekend to herself to get to the shops then what she wears and what she buys is up to her and out of her own pocket.
My maid just asked me to buy her jackets and jerseys. Just want to check whether we should be buying all our maids clothing? When she came, she had absolutely nothing so I bought her a few pairs of underwear and some track pants, jeans, shoes, slippers, pj's and t-shirts. Not sure what the protocol is on buying all their clothing? Should I be funding all her clothing purchases while she is under my employment? She says that all her friends' madams buy their clothing for them all the time. Don't know if I am being taken for a ride or if this is the norm here?
