I have no idea! All I know is that DH came from the spice market, or some Satwa spice shop, with turmeric and informed me it was the male one, as the male is stronger. He then said you can get male or female. It is a richer, golfer, yellow.

Turmeric is great for inflammation. I have it with tea daily. [b'>The male one[/b'>. If you get it on yours hands, wash fast ... I was part yellow at one stage, having spilt it on my legs and feet! ? I am also curious... edited by sunlight on 25/09/2013

Lulu and Co-op or you might find it in Satwa in some of the small fruit&veg shops or Karama/Deira.

Izz, my friend used this Indian spice called kalonji for her arthritis and it has helped her. Maybe worth looking it up.

Izzy, We take a teaspoon of turmeric everyday. I generally cook with it a lot, but on days where I don't, I put a spoonful in plain yogurt with a dash of pepper. It's an amazing spice, they are even looking into it's affects on reducing amyloid plaques (or prevention of) in those with Alzheimers. They also do turmeric capsules in most health stores if you don't like the tea.

In case this is useful - you can buy curcumin (active part of the turmeric) as a supplement to take in powder or capsule form, I don't know if it's available here in any health food shops but I've ordered it online before and had it shipped.

Was going to make a ginger and turmeric "tea" to see if it would help with my arthritis as apparently it's really good and i don't want to take the imuno-suppressants.... The recipe says an inch of each root, 2 cups of water and boil for 30 minutes; add honey to taste. edited by IzzyOnTheSeat on 24/09/2013 Thanks for the recipe. I'll try that instead of the powder which, granted, I overused. But still...it was like drowning myself in burning chalk.

Lulu's sells them by weight. Its near the garlic, onions and ginger. Union Co op and Hyperpanda sell in small packs, from Thailand.

What will you use it for cooking? Tea? I read that it's fantastically healthy but I tried to make a tea with it from powder form and it was VILE. Maybe if I boil the root it will turn out heaps better.
