I have friends that will move to Dubai and they are looking for secondary school British curriculum. Which ones should they get their names on?

TIA

i'm also all for non profit schools, i'm not willing to pay 100,000 AED per year just because of the schools name.

They are just starting Grade 12 this September, so I assume that they will update their board now.

There is a new high school in Dubai but for girls only, grades 9-12 following the k12 curriculum www.k12.com The school name is Dubai Women College High School It's in Al Nahda 2 area, behind NMC Hospital and inside the campus of HCT Women College. Now the college is a government one, but the school is private. Joint venture between the college and K12 in the U.S. It's a long story but the school is good. If you'd like to know more about it, they have an Open House on Feb. 28th Call them at 2089700 edited by Rushuccino on 15/02/2013 Hi Rushuccino! Why does the sign outside the DWC say that they only do grades 9, 10, and 11?

dont be like the sheep here, go and look and do your own research, as each child is different so are the schools, what works for one doesnt always work for all. dubai college may be the best but only because they select.... i dont live in dxb, but i know a lot of people who do, in am in abu dhabi, but i would always go for the non profit ones that have been here the longest. our school does much better than some of the uk selective schools, and we have many different nationalities and sen too. Seriously??? People asking for advice are sheep? If you read my post properly you would have seen that I'm looking for a friend as well! I understand everyone has different needs, waiting list etc. but its good to have a general idea which ones have a good rep and not. I don't think busybee2 was saying you were being a sheep by asking for advice. I think what she was saying was don't just choose DC because everyone says it's the best, a school that might not be everyone's first choice could turn out to be the best school for your friend's child because it suits their needs yet it might not make the best school in Dubai list. edited by starsouthern on 04/02/2013 quite right pamya thank you, if you read my reply properly. exactly my point i was making, the fact that people "follow like sheep", go to each one and make your own mind up.

To find the 'best secondary school' you have to think about what would fit your child best. You have to be aware also of what you yourself feel makes a good school or you will not be satisfied and fees are not cheap! So, for instance some children but more so some parents in my experience think that academics are everything and therefore would not be suited to DC where there is a lot of focus on the extra-curricula, sport, music, drama etc.etc. as well as the academics.

Dubai College is not the best secondary school in Dubai. It has the best secondary aged students in Dubai!!! That depends how you define "best students"! Academics is not everything. hehehe the ones that are taught to pass the exams. not all kids are academics.

How do you rate the 'best secondary school'? Best results, best value for money, best for your child? DS was at DESC for two years he needed additional help - they could not (would not) help he was failing in all areas. Moved him to GEMS WSO and after a year and a half, he is thriving and taking two GCSEs early this year .... choose wisely - and based on your child's needs, and not the 'best' school. Also the waiting lists at the considered 'best' schools are long and you may not get to choose. Good luck and best wishes to your friend in their move.

Thanks a lot for all replies, I will make a short list for her, there is a possibility of debenture, as the husband works for a large company.

I personally quite like DESC. They are good in academics and sport. Does your friend work for a company that has debenture? Then it would be much easier for her child to get into a top secondary school. Best of luck with the school hunt. :)

Dubai College is regarded as the best secondary school but they pick the students they want. They pick you,you dont pick them. Lol! I know someone whose son was told to get a tutor by a teacher there when he asked for extra help.... DC is like a UK grammar school therefore it should get good results because, as you say they cream off the high attainers. But that does not necessarily make it the best - other schools do exceptionally well with the students they have. There are so many other factors - there is no one size fits all solution to picking a school for your child. If the child is academic, then DC, Jess Arabian Ranches or DESC are good options. In general non-profit schools would be my choice. Is it not difficult to get into Desc and Jess because of debenture and siblings placements? Depends on the year group - I would imagine year 7 would be most difficult as feeder primaries take a lot of places. But as with an school in Dubai which is considered good, there will be limited places. There are lots of new schools opening up this year and next. I know sparkly have few in the pipeline, but again I prefer not for profit schools.
