Hi!

Wanted to ask you if any of you have done the PGCE either through Sunderland or Nottingham and was it worth it?

Am changing careers and am confused as to which route to take and whether schools will hire someone with a PGCE qualification from these universities.

Would appreciate any feedback!

Thanks

Please consider very carefully before choosing your PGCE course. I did a PGCE with Sunderland in 2000 and then taught in the ME for the next two years. Beforehand the people running the course assured me it was just as valid as doing it in the UK. I made enquiries and was told at the time that I could do the induction year in the UK with this PGCE. However, upon my return to the UK in 2004 Sunderland University told me I would have to to repeat the PGCE course in the UK. I attempted to convert it by replacing the teaching practices with UK teaching practices, done through a reputable college, but, despite my successful completion of these, no QTS was forthcoming. My own experiences of the course involved a distinct lack of resources- no teaching from Sunderland, no lectures, no back up materials or access to the e-library whatsoever. What it did give me was questions to answer and a series of essays to write. I was very well motivated and independent, supported by a most fantastic headmaster who himself had worked in teacher training, but ultimately it was an expensive mistake and one would be much better off doing it in the UK. edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013 edited by wikidz1 on 14/01/2013

Hi Alyna, I did my PGCE via Sunderland/Magrudys in 2006. The ministry were stipulating it as a necessary requirement in order to teach here, although at that point I had been teaching in an international school for 6 years. Not sure if my feedback is still current. I was working full time and it was a tough and expensive year but I enjoyed several aspects of the course-the chance to interact with people who were genuinely interested in education and the expertise of the mentors, in particular. However, IMO there was no real subject- specific teaching (I am referring to being a secondary teacher here) other than the wisdom shared by my mentors and this is something you would gain if you did the course in the UK. Also, I would suggest you might want to look at whether or not you would have any kind of teacher status if you return to your home country (the rules keep changing here). However, in answer to your question regarding 'hireability', there are many variables and the simple truth is that many jobs here are acquired through contacts. I have found that the British schools prefer QTS and recent UK experience but again that is not a hard and fast rule.

I am currently doing my PGCE through UNISA - South African. My teaching subjects are Accounting and Mathematics. I will finish at the end of this year, and was also wondering how easy it'll be to get a job here in Dubai seeings though I haven't taught before (besides my 10 week practicals) Anyone have some advice? xxTIA
