Was thinking to start of my weekend with a nice fondue. Back home I go to the butcher and just ask for fondue meat which is a mixed platter of all sorts but I have not seen anything like this here yet. Does anybody have any suggestions.
Alternatively. is there any place in Dubai I can go for fondue :).

Thanks ladies!

They have fondue gel, in little packages, at the Spinney's in Motor City for sure, usually in the BBQ section, and I think I've seen them elsewhere. It's the little gel packs. I find if I cover the remaining gel tightly with tin foil I can store it for the next time, otherwise it evaporates eventually. The brand is Le Creuset and it's a thin orange box with three gel packs. Tavola also has them.

can you easily get the fluid/gel for the flame? I'm really interested to find out the answer to this too. I already have a fondue set which I brought from my home country, but it uses methylated spirits, which I'm assuming can't be bought here. Any ideas anyone?

They had Fondue sets in Galeries Lafayette. I'm sure Oscars Vine Society ( bar/food) do Fondue on the Menu.

How about a healthier variation? Try fricassee of turkey breast cooked in vegetable stock; add all kinds of veggies; offer a number of interesting sauces... At the end of the meal, you'll definitely feel more comfortable than after a bourguignonne. That's a variation of the "Fondue Chinoise", isn't it?

I'm just looking at the Prime Gourmet web site, maybe you could ask them if they could prepare various meats for you? They're really helpful! I see their dish of the day on Saturday is Fondue Bourguignonne, though I'm not sure if that's ready cooked or what! Details: Next to First Gulf Bank Station, Emaar Gold & Diamond Park Building # 4, Sheik Zayed Road, Dubai, UAE T: +971 4 341 5445 F: +971 4 341 5820 E: [email protected] W: www.primegourmet.ae Thank you to whoever wrote about them here, they're great! Love their lamb and rosemary sausages!

I have bought one in Dubai Mall next to the organic store, but it's over a year ago. They had these fire things as well...

I also thought it was cheese fondue when I read fondue! Must be a Swiss thing.... saying that meat fondue is yummy too and now I quite fancy some! Hope you find everything you need... I don't know if you can find this here but my mum used to use coconut fat to cook the meat in apparently it's more healthy.

Ow it all sounds so good. Thanks a lot. Because of the work it won't be for tonight unfortunately, but tomorrow definitely! Hmmmm, can't wait.. Will go check out @home tomorrow. Was just thinking to quickly get the set in the supermarket while buying the meat tonight but clearly I was too optimistic. :)

If I tell this to my dad he gets a heart attack. It's because you guys are Swiss.. you live on cheese. Anybody out there knowing what I talk about ... :) edited by Eva B. on 09/06/2011 Where's your father from, then, Eva B.? As a half-French person, I also eat Fondue Bourguignonne, which is a good piece of steak cut up and cooked in oil with sauces on the side as you describe :)

meat branded as fondue or stir fry meat here is tough, buy steak that you would eat as a steak ie rump fillet ribeye that sort of steak otherwise you will end up with tough shoe leather. oil fondues are popular in south africa we bought a nice fondue set in @home, you can get them in most housewear stores like home centre etc we have also had (not here ) chinese style fondues where you cook fish and seafood and veg in a broth then when its all been cooked you eat the broth like soup. we used to do cheese when my kids were little with the bread but add on mini sausages and tomatoes, little mini potatoes, they loved it.

Saw some small cubes of beef in Geant, labelled as fondue yesterday. If you see a butcher there they MAY know what you are talking about and will dice up some other meats for you.

Eva B. I know what you mean :D I've been looking for a fondue pot here but I think I'll have to buy a proper one back home and bring it out. I would say try spinney's get one that doesn't have much fat and cut it into the cubes yourself. We usually do chicken, beef, pork and mushrooms.

Meat in fondue? Haha you guys would get along well. Do we think of fondue as something different? The one with olive oil in a pan that you put in the middle. Put meat on a stick and cook in the oil until it is done. With bread, sauces and salad on the side... Definitely! Fondue is a 100% cheese based dish eaten with bread. Raclette sometimes invloves meat "maily charcuterie" but yes I think your version of fondue is well, not really fondue.
