First & foremost, it is very important for every nurse to identify the patients who are at most risk and find out the underlying reasons.

Go to the doc. You dont want to end up with the wrong medicine.

In most cases, urinary tract infections are annoyances that cause urinary discomfort. However, if left untreated, UTIs can develop into very serious and potentially life-threatening kidney infections that can permanently scar or damage the kidneys. The infection may also spread into the bloodstream and then elsewhere in the body. It might be a good idea to have it checked out by your doctor Now that sounds scary! In my case I had to go and have it checked as it was getting worse and no sign of getting better! Thanks!!!

Hi, if you truly know its a uti, and not just a self diagnosis, then get yourself Zinnet, antibiotic. Take two a day for five days. Augmentin has become resistant to most strains of uti's and won't work. I've been getting them since I was two and pretty much know the low down on these things, cranberry juice is an urban legend so to speak, however the barley water works. Buy Robinsons barley water cordial. It won't cure it but it helps ease the symptoms. My doc says 'drink lots, pee lots' water that is... Hope you feel better soon, there's nothing more uncomfortable. X Oh wow I will take notes of this info. I have had then sometimes now I wonder if you can get this chronic? You seem to be well informed and prepared in case of UTI. Thank you for your advice I will certainly take note of that!!

After all I went to the Dr. Turned out to be an infection and have been put on Antibiotics and lots of fluids! Your instincts isn't wrong usually.

i'm a regular sufferer, I just drink lots of water, about 4 litres and citrus drinks, put lemon juice in the water, if it doesn't start to feel better in 24-48 hours get it checked, but mine always do. I've heard bicarbonate of soda is good too but never tried that.

I could take 10 million litres of the stuff and it makes no difference!

My GP in the UK used to always tell me that cranberry juice was no good, and not to waste my money in buying it, he always swore by water water water :) Here the urologist keeps telling me citrus juices, barley water etc....

Cranberry juice is my go-to for UTIs, it takes a few hours but there's always a marked improvement. Never heard of using barley water before but I'll keep that in mind next time, I love barley water!

I have had a few times... I take Augmentin 625mg for it straight from the chemist. This is what I was prescribed years ago and always does the trick.

Hi , do you know if a Urinary Tract Infection will clear up by itself if drinking more liquids than usual?? Or must i consult a DR? You can buy Trimethoprim over the counter for it ( I have used it in the past) I was given a prescription for this very thing in the UK in the Summer by a Urologist. Worked a treat! edited by spongemonkey on 01/10/2012

You should definitely see a doctor to ensure that it clears up ASAP - but years ago I had a sudden attack of horrible cystitis and couldn't get a doctor's appointment until the next day - my husband's mum made me drink loads of barley water, basically she poured boiling water over barley, let it sit there until it went cold and then I had to drink the water. Sounds gross but after a couple of litres of that and absolutely loads of fluids in general it actually cleared up within a day - I did still go to the doctor's appointment but by then was feeling almost fine. It sounded like an old wives tale to me but definitely helped. Like I said, I would never advise self medication alone for something like this so you should absolutely see the doctor but it is worth trying this too. Oh that sounded bad then. Old wife tales are still amazing and I do like to write them down in a book. Thanks for this one I will add it in my book :)

You must see a doctor. Taking ural without seeing a doctor can be dangerous as Ural just masks symtpoms which are still present and the infection can get worse. Although Captain Jackie was prescribed Ciprobay by a doctor, only take this drug if prescribed the side effects can be horrific.

I have loads of these in my life. You need to see doctor because symptoms vary from person to person. You need antibiotics because liquid only is not enough. Drinks loads of water as cranberry juice is good but too much sugar. The doctor will do a test on the spot and will tell you if UTI or not.

Had same problem last week. Thought it was a UTI and got antibiotics from the pharmacy. Didn't help and was in a lot of pain. Eventually saw a doctor who did a test and it was a water infection and prescribed Ciprobay which cleared it up within a couple of days. Went to Welcare in Knowledge Village and they did the test whilst I waited within 10 mins. Prob best to go and see a doctor... These infections can get very nasty if not treated or treated incorrectly.

I once cleared up a UTI on my own drinking absurd amounts of cranberry juice. I wouldn't recommend it though, and am still shocked that actually worked. I was young (dumb) and on holiday in Ibiza, and in no mood to see a Dr. I would definitely recommend seeking out a doctor or a pharmacist. They should give you something that should sort it our very quickly.

Its probably best to go to see a Dr, you never know how serious it is and can develop into a kidney infection.

I'm with littleone on this--extra liquids were not helpful, and cranberry juice/supplements did not help one iota. UTI's can be so terribly aggravating. I am not sure what they are called, but I remember taking tablets which turned the urine a different color and greatly alleviated the discomfort. (might be what littleone suggested) I did not see a doctor for this, but a chemist. They sold me a home testing kit to make sure that a UTI was actually the culprit of my symptoms. Once that was confirmed, I purchased the pills I mentioned, and after a couple of days I was fine.

No, not usually. Go to the chemist and get some Ural or magnesium powder to drink and also drinks cranberry juice. If you tell the chemist you have a UTI they will steer you in the right direction. If there is a lot of pain I would see your doctor.
