Hi! My maid is a horrible mopper, and I have no idea how to mop. I had someone in to train her once but I can't keep on paying a maid agency to come train my maid. So I need to learn to do it myself properly. Does anyone have an idiot's guide to mopping, like some step-by-step directions? TIA.

i have a steam mop - i bought one for my mum originally but so good i bought one myself too - took my housemaid a little while to get the hang of using something different but it's great - no buying floor cleaner or mop heads - kills 98% of bacteria, etc. and only uses water. Can buy in Carrefour, Sharaf DG, etc. Well recommend it edited by happyindubai on 18/05/2011 Whats the brand? and do you plug it in? I hear so much about steam mops; which ones the best one? Again :( '..........I hear so much about steam mops; which ones the best one?......' I had one and found it to be average at best. I also have quite a few friends with a steam mop in the cupboard, never again to see the light of day.

sweep or vacuum first, then put exactly the right amount of cleaning liquid in a bucket of water (not too much or your floor will stay sticky), dip in mop, wring out and then introduce the business-end to your floor, wave it around a bit and leave to dry. It isn't rocket science. LOL, I know.... I should have just told her to learn the hard way, but hey, I'm feeling nice.

It's the stuff in the gaps between the tiles. My place doesn't appear to have that but that seems too good to be true! A little like grey matter, it can often be missing in chunks.

Lol how much water are you putting on your floors! Mine is almost dry but the time I've gone from one room to another. I'm interested to know about the steam mop thou, how do they work? Do you plug them in? Do they heat up the water? Are they heavey if they are full of water? We have one, bought it at Ace, as I have one in the states and can't live without it. Although the one I have is The Shark and I prefer it a lot more to my Black and Decker here but the Shark isn't available here. They aren't heavy at all. You fill it with tap water, plug it in, wait a few seconds and go. It literally dries within seconds so it doesn't matter if the kids and dog are running around. Besides, you only use steam to clean so no chemicals. Are they any good for slobber ;) My bassett hound can slobber for England lol

ENJO! I bought mine about 8 years ago and would not even consider using anything else. It's just so simple, quick and green. I even bought one last summer for my folks and carted it home on the flight. They love it as they are getting on a bit and they too find it effortless. I can honestly say that if you use one you will never go back to mops.:) edited by Kate one on 18/05/2011

Sanddy_Dogg has a good point, if she has to pay someone else from her own pocket she'll learn to do it fairly rapido!! Its not a difficult task just a pain to do, maybe shes trying to get out of doing it? DH pulls this stunt all the time to avoid doing stuff;)

It IS that easy! I do find it harder to wring my mop out when the head is old and needs replacing. It is simply a case of slopping the mop in the bucket and twisting it really hard in the wringer that sits on top of the bucket. The floor will then be damp but not soaked. As JShepherd says, one floor is dry by the time you're nearly done the next. I would perfect the technique myself then show the miad and tell her that's how it must be done - and make her do it like that. As they say; you don't have a dog and bark yourself *waits for someone to get upset at me calling maids dogs* If my maid refused to do it properly I would have told her that they need to be done right and if she's not willing I would get someone else in to do them but deduct it from her pay. She'd learn how to mop then.

ENJO! ENJO! ENJO! I know I sound like a walking advertisement for ENJO every time a cleaning thread comes up. Lol. I bought an ENJO kit from Jo in Dubai almost five years ago and I still use everything from that original kit. It all still works so it's been worth every dirham. Nothing cleans floors like the ENJO floorcleaner and all you need is a few squirts of water on the fibre. No chemicals, not even vinegar. Hands down the easiest and fastest way to CLEAN floors. :D Here's the website in case you don't know what ENJO is ;) and the local distributor is so very helpful. http://www.enjodubai.com/

I have the vileda mop and bucket so you don't actually have to wring it with your hands. But my maid doesn't squeeze it out enough because the floors are still wet after 20 minutes. I have 2 small children so they are always running around slipping, my son even banged his head a couple times on the floor. I have told her many times to squeeze it harder but she just doesn't get it.
