Am feeling very down, have suffered with these bouts of 'lowness' before but feel just awful this time. Can't see the point in anything, am sooo tired, can hardly bring myself to do the school run or have a conversation. Just want to go to bed and stay there. Any ideas on how to pull myself round??

So glad you have seen a doc, you'll be even gladder when the medicines start to help with the deficiency. For people who don't know about depression - they will ask you to snap out and not to poison your body with meds etc. Ignore them for they don't know any better and stick to doctor's advice. Do go online and try some EFT for depression too. Magnum's videos are good. Search on youtube. Stick to your medicines though and don't discontinue on your own

Excellent, good on you for going. Be kind to yourself and give it time and keep in touch with doctor. Maybe start writting down each day how you are feeling and in time you will begin to see you are improving. Thanks so much for all your replies. Im feeling much better today, took myself to dr's yesterday and have been convinced to give some tablets a try. Sorry i didn't respond to your lovely messages earlier.

I'm so pleased you found someone to help you. Please do keep in regular contact with the doctor...did she suggest any other strategies to work on with the medication? When I've been on anti-depressants, it's taken a good six weeks for them to work effectively and I've always taken the medication in conjunction with sessions with a psychologist. It's amazing what a difference it makes to have a professional help you to retrain your thought patterns. Take care of yourself.

And don't be shy to go back and tell the dr if it's not working, sometimes these things need tweaking. You will feel better soon!!

Take the advice please this poster below wrote and go and see a doctor and get a Well Woman check up and explain all of how you feel. Write down in advance all your feelings and impact it is having on you so you read it to your doctor. Be sure and have your Thyroid checked by a blood sample. It could be a number of things," Glandular fever" is another thing, my daughter suffered undetected the year she was doing her GCSE's and was not showing some of the usual symptoms. Best to see a General Doctor to start and if advised to take medication give it a go to help yourself in the short term, and when not so tired and more able, try and get out walking and mixing a little with people and slowly you will improve. You sound like you may be suffering from either ; A.) Under active thyroid B.) Lack of Vitamin D C.) Depression Go to your doctor!!

Please see the doctor ASAP. My son suffered terribly from depression and severe mood swings as a young child and into his teens. We took a very conservative attitude in the early years "come on buck up,pull yourself together" etc. together with loads of hugs talking and showering him with love.We honestly just thought he got into otherwise and difficult moods. At the age of 17 despite his protests I took him to see the GP. He was diagnosed with a chemical imbalance and has been on medication ever since. It was a real uphill battle to get him to take the medication.A result of an overzealous mother and father warning/showing their kids about the dangers of drug addiction! As a previous poster said we compared it to someone with diabities having to take theirinsulin, this seemd to help.He is now 30,still on medication and tested regularly. Life has got easier for him since he has been on medication. Discuss everything with the doctor ie if and when you want to have children, what to do during pregnancy and after (that is of course if you are at that stage in your life). As has been said start making list of your symptons and feeings and when you are at your worst/best. Please don't take our attitude that it will go away if you change your frame of mind, it might not. Sending huge hugs your way. edited by Nomad on 24/01/2012

Call to Lifeworks (Al Wasl Rd, close to Dr. Michael's) - Aya in the reception is very helpful...

I don't know how serious this really is for you but the first thing I would do is put on some real upbeat music. Think of some songs that usually make you really happy. Mostly this works for me. Whatever you do, don't just sit there silently or hang around in bed waiting for it to pass naturally. If that fails then I would go and see someone who can help whether that is a good friend who makes you laugh or a GP.

Please take Greenish's wonderful advice and go and see a GP - preferably someone with Western training who may have a bit more awareness of depression and/or anxiety. If you wrote that you had diabetes or had just broken your arm, you would be told to get straight to a doctor for remedy, if you do have depression, it is just the same - diagnosable and treatable. You will feel so much better once you open the topic with a medical professional. good luck to you and if you are ever really really down, there is usually someone on this board no matter what time of day or night, just jump on and 'speak' to someone.

I'm so sorry you're going through this. I have to echo the others and suggest you see a good GP as soon as you can. Depression is a very real, very treatable condition. Depression does not have a one-size-fits-all solution. Your GP can do an initial assessment and refer you to the right specialist if needed. Sometimes 'just' a good talk to someone is all that's needed to get yourself on the right track. Many of the ladies below have great suggestions and your course of action may involve some, all or none of those. Only someone with professional experience in the field who can talk to you at length will know what's best for you. Can I suggest that you start writing down how you're feeling (emotionally & physically), anything that triggers particularly low patches and anything that gives you a little 'lift' during the day. Also write down any questions you may have for a doctor 'cause I guarantee you'll forget them all in the appointment. ;) It also helped me to take a trusted friend to the first appointment...she was able to remember a whole lot more than I could of what was said! PLEASE...pick up the phone and call someone NOW. Once you're on the right track, you'll feel SO much better and start to wonder why you waited even one day. I always found the GP's at Dubai London Clinic to be wonderful and they have a good network of local psychologists and psychiatrists to whom they can refer you. Take care of yourself.

Hello, I can only agree with Summerdream, unfortunately I've also been there. Medication sounds too severe, but it's not it just sorts out the chemical imbalance in the brain which causes depression. And it absolutely doesn't mean that for the rest of your life you'll be a pill popping nutter, you just need that initial help. After that all the other suggested things may start working eg. excercise, hobbies... Good luck.

No matter how many people told me earlier, it didn't make sense to me and what a waste of years of my life...please try read up on the net and you may understand that you need to see a doctor given the symptoms you have described. Anti-depressants are not the monster they are made out to be. Don't take advise from us non-professionals. Sometimes its better for a pregnant woman to be on anti-depressants than not for instance (this is professional advice). Anti-depressants are not placebos they do work. (I would blank out when doctors tried to convince me that!). Getting a headstart with medication (if the doctor thinks so) will be good and excercise even if brisk working should really help. Please please see a doctor, preferably a psychiatrist.

Keep in mind that SSRI medications have been linked to problems with fetuses- particularly heart problems, and increased miscarriage - and if you are planning to get pregnant in the near future, you shouldn't start on them.

ashnaisbitt1986, I'm so sorry to hear you are feeling like this. I would also say to please go and see your doc. I went through a patch like this earlier this year and I found a couple weeks on meds helped me get some perspective again and allowed me to see the things in my life that were dragging me down and to do something practical about it. I'm sending you a massive hug. Be kind and gentle with yourself and give yourself a break. FFx

It sounds like you're suffering from depression, which is sometihng unrelated to your circumstances. It is a brain chemistry problem. Go see a good Dr. I've heard that Dr Fischer on Wasl Road is very good. You are not weak. Good on you for speaking up and asking for help. It will pass with the right treatment. I agree with Ginnee - as good as it is for everyone to offer advice it sounds like it is something that needs a bit more help than going for a run or getting your nails done, that is good for if you are feeling a bit fed up but not for this - if you can't see the point in anything and just want to take yourself off to bed then it does sound like depression and you should go to see your doctor.

I agree with Helping_Hand, count your blessings and stay away from people or places that makes you feel sad or that brings negativity to your mood. Open up about your feeling to a friend. :) I hope this helps you.

And if time is difficult to find, try eliminating caffeine and junk from your diet--try some green tea and fresh fruits, vegetables, vitamins, and skimp on animal protein. Drink lots and lots of water---mental state can benefit immensely from these things :)

What do you like to do? When I feel like I can't drag myself to do anything at all, I make time for my hobbies and I drag myself to the spa. We all feel awful from time to time. Set a goal for yourself to leave the house once a day (aside from the school run!), even just to go to the nail salon or for a walk around the block.
