Since it's introduction I have struggled to understand the thumbs up and thumbs down. Can you please explain why it was introduced and what it is supposed to display or accomplish? Forgive me if I sound rude as this is not my intention.

The purpose is very unclear and many people use it in different ways. I am a bit tired of reading a post that consists of one simple question and seeing that for some reason it has four thumbs down but no responses. It makes one reluctant to post anything which is a shame as this used to be such a helpful and entertaining board. If a member agrees or disagrees with a post there is space to respond.

Really what is it for and am I the only one that does not like it? The thumbs will tell.....

Hi All, The Thumbs Up/ Thumbs Down were indeed supposed to be I agree/ I don't agree type of message. Obviously they can be interpreted and used in other ways as has been seen. In light of this we are in the process of removing the Thumbs Down option and will leave the Thumbs Up option only. Our team are working on the removal of the option and it will be removed as soon as it can be. Warm regards, EW Admin

I think its funny when posters get their knickers in a twist over the thumbs up or down. I also think the thumbs up or down are mainly done by non members wanting to contribute but don't necessarily want to join

Hi ladies, thanks for your feedback. We've taken it into account and will be removing the thumbs down option in due course. Warm regards EW Admin Great move, the very fact a post from admin addressing this concern gets thumbed down confirms it’s time for cyber heaven for the thumbs down icon.

The "Thumbs Down" option is being used for cyber bullying. I always get 2 thumbs down, no matter what I comment. I ignore it. Two people have nothing better to do than dislike me, sad.

Nomad I could not agree more with you, it’s disgraceful that anyone would thumb down a post on that thread. The whole thumbs thing needs to be removed as it is being misused. It's always been misused and was always going to be about the poster not the post...we've all had innocuous posts mercilessly downthumbed and always will until they stop letting people who aren't logged in use them... Yup happened to me earlier, gave the valid reason why a naming and shaming post would ahve been deleted - nothing but thumbs down. Why? For giving the 'facts'? Ridiculous.

They are used as a bullying tool by the same handful of posters who have brought EW down, IMO. Most often they appear on these types of[b'> "what's wrong with EW" threads[/b'> deflecting attention elsewhere but their bizarre behaviour is consistent with school playground bullies with far too much time on their hands. They're the only interesting discussions on here these days lol

You don't even have to be a member or logged in to give a thumbs up or down SD, i don't think those thumbs up or down stay though, they just stay, they only work as far as i can work out when you are logged in. Maybe admin could enlighten.

This is my personal explanation. THUMB UP: Good news I like what you are saying It is informative You have never been rude in previous posts I like you THUMB DOWN: Bad news What are you saying is sad You have been rude in previous posts I don't like you *Re. Earthquake. Do you thumb up someone in real life telling you that they divorced, had a car crash or a family member was involved in a earthquake? Well that just goes to show how the thumbs system is interpreted by different people. A thread about thinking about others who have been involved in a tragedy needs thumbs up to say "yes, I support that statement", a thumbs down says " I don't give a monkeys about anyone else and I’m selfish". This is why the whole thumbs thing should be removed as it is being misused and misinterpreted. Thumbing down by definition adds a negative connotation not a supportive one, there is no justification for its use on many of the threads, although some may be using it as an extension of their egos.

Ignore it, I don't thumb up or down, I just thumb up if I'm thanking someone for replying to my threads. I got followed and thumbed down for suggesting a 200 AED gift for a 5 yrs old. On that day all my recent posts were thumbed down looool. edited by wickedangel_78 on 27/04/2015

I was thinking about this very thing this morning after the Nepal thread. I've never used the down thumb and try to ignore it but it does add an overall negative feel to the forum. At least on facebook groups people have to own any negativity they bring to the discussion but on here people can just anonymously down thumb. It gives an atmosphere of nasty playground whispers. With the all the criticism of general chit chat a while back, closely followed by the introduction of the down thumbs, I'm finding myself coming here less and less. It's not nice getting an anonymous kicking or seeing others get one and it puts me off posting. I'm all for different points of view, lively discussion and disagreements but not the form it takes with the down thumbs. They seem to be totally against the intended spirit of the forum.

You don't even have to be a member or logged in to give a thumbs up or down Exactly - imagine the number of people, male or female, young or old, that can trawl this forum just liking/disliking. Doesn't mean everyone on this board is hating on everyone else.

I was so upset when I saw the thumbs down LC it really disturbed me. How could you thumb down a thread that really came from the heart and ended with a RIP.......

I have never been a fan of the thumbs......just had a look at the thread on the Earthquake in Nepal. Lolacat was merely asking for us all to spare a thought for anyone from Nepal working in Dubai worrying about family and friends. Hopefully many of the 17 thumbs down don't understand the concept of the thumbs down, however for those who thumbed down because the thread was by LC ,shame on you. Unfortunately there are those who don't even read the content of the posts they merely thumb down the poster.......I would prefer only one function, "like" and nothing else. edited by Nomad on 27/04/2015

So now if someone puts a thumbs down on my post does that mean that they don't like the post in general or that they don't like thumbs down? Thumbs down to thumbs down or thumbs down to the post? If you have put a thumbs down please enlighten us as to why you did so.

They were supposed to be a sort of added value, for some scoring...I guess...instead they are use as a sort of mini-bullying ...you don't like the poster, for whatever reason, no matter what the post is about...thumbs down. You belong to the gang, thumbs up!! Let's see how many thumbs down I get for this post...
