Help - my DS is out on a visit visa until we can sort out residency visa but that wont be for a few months. He has no health insurance coverage for the UAE

Two weeks ago I took DS to a private hospital for what we thought was an infected hair folicle on his bottom which had turned nasty. Boys - why don't they tell you when they first notice something is wrong - he waited til it burst and was too painful to sit down !!

They immediately lanced and cleaned under a local and dressed the wound. Gave us anitibotics, painkillers etc. They said it would need further treatment but not for several months or even a year.

Yesterday it flared up - he is still on the antiboitics and daily dressing change at home. I took him back to the hospital and they treated him again. But they are saying he needs surgery now - 3 days in hospital and in bed for a couple of weeks and may take months before he will be ok !! oh and he will probably need skin grafts on his bottom. They have quoted 20,000 +++ dhs for the surgery and hospital stay - skin grafts would be extra. They know he has no insurance and we will pay.

Ideally we would send him back to Oz were he would be treated free in a public hospital but we have no family that would be able to care for him for such a long period or anywhere for him to stay.

We live in Abu Dhabi and a friend suggested we take him to a public hospital in Dubai as she thought it might be cheaper and they wont tell us he needs more treatment than is necessary.

I know you are all thinking why didn't we get him health insurance - he is young, fit and healthy and we thought we would have a visa sorted for him very quickly. But not the case - immigration/visa is proving a bit of a nightmare.

So - wonderful helpful ladies of this forum I need your help. Have any of you personally or friend/relative had surgery/treatment in Dubai without any insurance and know the charges at public hospitals and which public hospital? We don't have public hospitals in Abu Dhabi that we can take him to only private.

Please no debates on why he should have health insurance - we know he should but he doesn't and we can't get him any til he has a residencey visa.

Thank you

Sorry Julianne, but why don't you just buy him a health insurance policy? Or at least get travel insurance? Generally pre-existing conditions are not covered.

My DH went to A&E at Rashid Hospital. He was admitted and ended up staying 8 nights and having surgery while he was there. He had anti-biotic drip the whole time he was there and the total cost was about 3000AED. We were dreading the cost but was pleasantly surprised. The care was good and it was no different to a NHS hospital in the UK. Also, I took my DD to the Iranian A&E for stitches in her foot and I found all staff really friendly and caring. Everybody has different experiences though. I hope your son is better soon.

My experience at the Iranian hospital was awful, I went after having a fall, got there, had the x-ray, only to be told all the doctors are off for the afternoon, come back at 5. I insisted that i see the A & E doctor, she told me I was fine, just go home. Went to Jebil Ali Hosp the next day, to discover i had 3 broken ribs, same x-ray, even i could see from the x-ray they were broken. Never again.

I have some experience of hospitals and healthcare as I work in this field (previoulsy both in nursing and insurance) Rashid will not neccesarily be free as your son is not a resident of Dubai yet. And even then you can be asked to pay (as happened to a friend of mine who had a 30,000 AED bill when her maid was admitted (she was legal with visa etc) I work in the billing sectors of healthcare and many good private hospitals do not charge any more than the government ones. Actually what I think you need is a good Dr/Surgeon who you can trust who will give you an honest opinion about what treatment is really necessary and when. If he has an abscess or even a pilonidal sinus this does not always need an inpatient stay if you can attend daily for dressings with the nurses. I would seek an opinion from a doctor or surgeon you trust as to what exactly is necessary....many doctors/clinics etc in Dubai are keen to do lots of proceedures that may not be needed, or admit people who could be seen on an outpatient basis as it generates income. edited by CJGH on 07/06/2012 Thanks CJGH - we know a surgeon here in AD and I have made an appoinmtnet for DS - we will see what he has to say first before deciding what to do.

I've taken my children for x-rays at the Iranian hospital, and while it doesn't appear to be a modern hospital ,it is cheap and the staff were polite enough ( taking language barriers into consideration). It reminded me of the old hospitals in the UK, just very very busy. They have a private/fast track service to beat the queues, I think ( and don't quote me) it was around Aed 250 to be seen quickly ( I'm sure this included consultation with the doctor) Parking is a bit of a nightmare. HTH

I know pleny of people who have had treatment, including surgery, at the Iranian hospital and were very happy with it. I didn't think I'd dreamt I'd heard good things about it. Ishehere obviously has different expectations. Bad experience?

Thanks SB - if we have to pay we will but don't want to feel we are being ripped off at a private hospital if the same treatment is available at a lessor cost in a public hospital. I think the Iranian Hospital in Dubai has a good reputation, and set up on a charitable basis, maybe worth a look? have you been there?? I wouldn't send my worst enemy if they were dying! Really? No, sorry, have never been there myself - you'd better scrub that, JA :( Thanks for the update ishehere and Simples - I've deleted from list :(

Hi J! We have used both the Rashid and the Al Wasl for emergency cases for DD whilst in Dubai, Rashid for a broken arm and Al Wasl pediatrics for severe tummy pains, which at the time could have ended up in emergency surgery and overnight stays etc.. Neither (if I recall correctly) accept the Medinet health insurance we were on, so insurance or not made no difference to us....anyway we paid out of our own pocket and it wasn't at all bad. DD's X-rays, cast and removal of cast at Rashid was like hundreds AED. DD's tests, drips etc. and overnight hospital stay for the tummy pains came to about 300AED, we ended up not having emergency surgery then, but during the process we weren't sure where we were going to end up - OK, discharge to home or Not OK, emergency surgery.....But, I recall it was VERY difficult trying to get information on costs and potential scenerios during the whole process iyswim.....communications was difficult....the docs have no idea about costs and don't appear to get involved in the costs/admin. HTH. ETA - Sorry I can't tell you what the cost of emergency surgery would have been at the Al Wasl, at the time, if it had been necessary, we thought "it is what it is.".... edited by Sugarbeach on 07/06/2012

my only concern here is that my friend turned up green sick in that he hadnt seen any other doctor and so Rashid were responsible for him from the start, and he had no family in town with him so he was a waif when he turned up as friends only visited later. Not sure how they will respond if he has already got meds, plasters and mum/ dad in tow. I would maybe call them first and check what happens if someone has no insurance but is sick etc. I really hope that works for you. My friend got sick like that back in around 2009.

The Rashid hospital here is excellent and a UK friend of mine got treatment there and they didnt charge him but that was because he was admitted through the emergency department rather than a referral so I suggest he turn up at emergency and then telling them he has no insurance. My friend also pleaded poverty. He was kept in for a week and lots of tests and didnt get charged, and I understand that they were really really good too. Usually there is some form of travel insurance maybe even with the credit card used to buy the ticket? But meantime Rashid may be his best bet
