Can I have my change please?
Pulling from another thread about stores keeping your change. I'm surprised that a thread hadn't been started with the Gulf News report on supermarkets and stores withholding change due to customers.
I got tired of hassling with clerks for 5, 10, 15 and 20 fils so I only use my debit card when I shop.
On those occasions that I use cash to make a small purchase I demand the 5, 10, 15, 20 fils that they withhold. When I asked for my change I'm told: no small change. I have been given a packet of gum in place of my change. I let the cashier know that I don't chew gum, I want my change!!! When they hand me candy, I tell them I don't eat candy, I just want my change. If they own me 5, 10, 15 or 20 fils I ask for 25 fils back and tell the cashier to take it from the next customer. Who are they to decide NOT to give me my change? I have had people behind me look at me as if I have two heads for asking for such a small amount, which over the years, adds up to quite a large amount.
A couple of weeks ago I made a purchase from a plant nursery that came to 35 AED. I handed the guy 40AED which he put in his pocket and proceeded to hand me the plants. I asked for my change - 5AED - and he said: "For me". I told him: "Nooooo, it's not." Rather than give it back to me he handed me another plant!!! He got his 5AED, I got an extra plant, and the owner was out a plant.
I hope more people start demanding their change at counters and when its under 20 fils, demand 25 fils if they can't give you the correct change. Start taking back what has been taken, without your permission, from you over the years.
