Just how expensive are gym memberships in Dubai?

Is anyone here a member of a gym? Mixed or women's I don't mind. Would just like to have an idea of the membership costs as gyms - to my knowledge - don't display these on their websites.

I've noticed a lot of threads here looking for personal trainers and in one of them a poster commented that gym membership was "more expensive than my weekly rent". This has got me worried as I just don't think the climate is conducive to exercising outdoors, and personal trainers generally just do specific sessions rather than let you use their facilities to do your own thing. I really need to exercise once I get settled.

Also, comments on who you consider to be the *better* gyms would be great (eg in terms of variety of equipment, maintenance, classes etc).

As always, thanks in advance.

Quay membership is really expensive but then it is at the Madinat ...so what do u expect! Most people get sick of gyms after a few months anyway. So just 2 months is great. Come on offer something!

There is a new gym/core fitness studio which opened recently across from the Green Community (opposite Choitram's). I have been to fitness studio which is good and is much cheaper than Yoga Om in the Market Area. It is very reasonably priced, it works out at about 275 dirhams a month and the best part is that you do not need to take out a one year membership. There is a small joining fee but they sometimes have offers when they will waive it. Now you're talking my language!!! mejane replied :" We have a husband and wife membership at Quay and from memory it cost AED 25000 for a year. " Jayzus! That's like about $6,000 AUS. What do they give you for that, that other gyms don't?!! Do the exercise for you??? MWah haaha

Which Fitness First gyms in Dubai have pools? Just joined the one in Ibn Battuta for 329AEd per month. It's the committed 12 month plan. You have to pay 2 months upfront (1st month and last month). Thought it was a good deal considering everything is inclusive.

Sounding even better! Off to google where Festival City is ;) Thanks Edited: OK, done that, but it's a long way from where I think we'll ultimately live (somewhere around Green Community or AR hoepfully) and work (Internet City). So their Media City site is looking like it might be the closest. Looking at their timetable though and spinning is down there so that's good news. Unfortunately it's a premium club so I assume the membership price will also be a premium! No data on that on the website... All good info for when I get over there though. edited by Buy me a Pony on 21/01/2011

That sounds interesting Annie. Would be keen to hear your impressions of it once you've had an orientation visit. 30 DHS per class is not too bad at at 3,555 DHS I guess at least you're not subsidising the classes too much. I'm figuring I would probably only do spin classes anyway, the rest I will do myself on cardio and weights machines. One more thing I want to add, the classes at Fitness First are free, so are all the other facilities (swimming pool, sauna, les mills classes, etc.). They also offer a spinning class, I think it's only offered at the Festival City fitness club. And no I don't work for them lol.

Hi! There is a new fitness center with a gym next to AR (closer than Polo Club) called Optimal Fitness. It is located in Studio City - on the opposite side of the road to Mirador La Coleccion. I have not been there yet but got an email from them with gym membership rates - 3555 dhs single membership (12 months). Group exercise class rates are currently 30 dhs per class. Planning to go there next week...

Phew, thanks for all the replies it's giving me a really good picture of the landscape there. They are definitely more expensive than Australia, where you generally pay $100 membership (c. 350 AED) and about $150 / 500 AED per month for a very decent gym. At the moment I am only paying $70 per month, so 250 AED, because that was the price when I joined 5 years ago and the yhave a loyalty programme. THe Haaya Club was sounding good till I learned it had limited equipment and you had to pay [i'>extra [/i'>for classes. What's with that??? :-o THe Ladies Club is definitely too expensive and too far away from where I think we'll be living. ******! The facilities there sound fabulous. Looks like Fitness First might be the best one to look into despite being in malls. I like to have lots of people around me, a wonder wall in front of the cardio equipment so I can feel the *buzz* to exercise my best. At least you can go pick up groceries or whatever afterwards without having to drive elsewhere. Thanks for all your comments. Keep 'em coming!

I'm a member of Fitness First, I paid around 3800aed for 13 months. I was thinking of joining the Ladies Club when my Fitness First membership is over since I also live walking distance, but for 10,000aed a year I think I'll pass.

i second the ladies club on beach rd. but found it a pain to drive there. apartment living is recommended since gym, pool and sauna is provided free of charge right and available right at your doorstep. depends where you live, i can walk there so it's really convenient.

The Haaya club has limited gym equipment, I find! Also, even if you are a member you still have to pay additional to attend their classes, which are also open to the general public, so no benefit to paying the membership fee. The Haaya Lakes gym is nicer than the Haaya Town Center one, which is like working out in a noisy dance club, the music is absolutely blaring. They do have a small ladies only room with threadmill and other equipment. Also you can hire one of the Haaya Club personal trainers without being a member, so unless you will use the gym equipment very regularly and would use the pool, I don't think it is worth paying the membership fee. They do have a special offer on at the moment 15 free personal training with an annual membership, or 8 free with a 6 month membership.

The biggest problem with gyms here, IMO, is that there aren't many of them and the ones that are, aren't great. If you live in the Ranches, your nearest proper gym is in Mirdiff. There is a little gym at the Polo Club, but it's really little. Most apartments have little gyms in them, but it's not the gym that I'm used to, for example, with lots of equipment. The Hayya is ok if you live in the Springs/Meadows, but its also not super-modern. The only ones that are big and modern are Fitness First, and they aren't convenient, being located in malls for the most part.

Fitness First was 420dhs per month, I think some are cheaper than others, depends on the location and what facilities are available.

Hayya (where I go) charges around 7.5k for a couple and about 10k for a family. If you look up Hayya you'll see they have numerous locations. They have mainly Life Fitness equipment (plenty of it too) and all the locations hold classes, and most have swimming pools - all outdoor with heating/chilling. Beach Club memberships like Jumeirah Beach Hotel and The Ritz Carlton are outrageously expensive, some are around 40k a year, golf clubs cost about 15-25k I hope this helps!

am a member of the ladies club - it is 10,000 aed per year.... it has tennis courts, squash courts, gym, classes, 2 swimming pools, beach, arts centre, special events (fashion shows, cooking demos etc that are free to members), creche and spa...... I love it there - it so peaceful and the squash courts are never booked out so even if i forget to book its usually free. edited by Izzy99 on 21/01/2011
