Hello,

This is my first post :) and I hope some of you can offer some advice/tips on how to get myself out on the roads of Dubai! I've been here since Feb and haven't managed to pluck up the courage to drive. Don't understand why as I used to consider myself a confident driver and back home I had no qualms about driving anywhere, be it in central London or a Scottish country lane. Maybe I should've got myself out there as soon as I arrived and I've left it too long now. We've just moved to the Ranches and am feeling a bit isolated, I work during the week but it'd be nice to get in the car one evening when my son is in bed and go to an exercise class or have the choice to go out for an hour or so at the wkend alone or just with my son.

Ahhhh it's actually driving me crazy (pardon the pun lol!) thinking about the stupidness of it but I'm just so scared! Everyone seems to drive like maniacs and all the signs are either non-existant or terrible! Have any of you been in a similar position and what did you do? Should I take baby-steps...start driving around the ranches and work up from there or should I just throw myself in the deep end? Oh and my DH told me that he doesn't think i should drive here as he would just worry!! How patronising! Think he secretly likes me depending on him as I'm usually so independent. So sorry to waffle on, thinking about it gets me in a bit of a state!

Hoping for some helpful tips ladies, TIA! :)

So I had planned to go out for my 1st drive last night but DH ended up having to work late and by the time he got home it was my son's bedtime so we couldn't go out. I'd got myself all psyched up for it too :( Need to do it soon while I'm feeling good!!

Good luck :) Felt exactly the same, put it off for months and months.... then put it off all last week... then finally on Saturday I got behind the wheel... the anticipation was FAR worse than driving was, I soooo wish I'd do it much sooner! I've got lost a few times but it doesn't really matter? I've got to know Dubai more over the last few days than I have in the last 18 months :) I went out with my DH the first time, since then I prefer to go without him because he stressed me out far more than the driving did! You'll feel so proud of yourself once you do it x Yes much easier on your own :)

IMHO the anticipation is much worse than the reality and I am sure once you are out on the roads you'll be fine. Keep reminding myself of that. Too much time thinking about something is a huge no-no! For me anyway. Re sat navs, I'll probably get one but I think a map might work better for me in terms of getting to know where everything is in relation to each other. With sat navs, I tend to just follow them like a robot and not actually take in my surroundings, landmarks, etc. Looking forward to all the coffee and cake coming my way!! :) Don't worry I've got the map too. I tend to look at the map before I leave and again when I (eventually) get where I'm going to. Driving around on my own with just a map wouldn't work.

OK so I cheated a little. Bought a sat nav, which is really good, but I still get lost sometimes, mainly my fault as I think I know which way to go, when I obviously don't :( Only been here about 5 weeks and had use of a car for the last three and like most of the ladies on here, just keep practising. Only one problem with going to the various Malls - coffee and cake ;) Sat nav is not cheating - it helps hugely and made my life so much easier when we got our own car - I still use mine 3 1/2 years on from time to time especially if I head into unknown territory - Deira, around the airport, Mirdiff or horrors end up Sharjah bound and the traffic is horrendous.

Hi Toffeepop. I must have arrived at the same time as you and I didn't drive for the first 6 weeks as DH was using the car for work etc. However now I am mobile and I have to say it has made my life here so much more enjoyable - before that I felt very hemmed in (like you I am used to being independent). We also live in the Ranches and I am making it my mission to get out somewhere new as often as possible (mainly different malls so at least when I get there I can have coffee and cake :) ) IMHO the anticipation is much worse than the reality and I am sure once you are out on the roads you'll be fine. There is some good advice here and I have to say I have been properly lost twice so far and both times I was very relieved that I had a full tank of petrol .. I just took a deep breath and thought - oh well at least I am getting some more practice in ... I had a particularly fun tour of Ras El Khor industrial area but got home in the end ... you'll be fine.

Thank you everyone for your replies and advice, it's helped me to get it into perspective and try to relax a bit! As many of you have said, if I take a wrong turn off and get lost.. so what! as long as I know which direction I need to be going in. I just need to stay calm and focused. Tonight's the night I'm going out for the first time so will let you know how it goes! :) Saw this thread earlier today and have thought about it a lot today :) Can remember being in the same situation a long while ago. A very kind lady offered to let me follow her to school, as it was only the second week that we had been here and DH was busy at work, so, in a automatic car (I had never driven an automatic before and it was a rental) I managed to successfully deposit child at school on time. 'Pay It Forward' was a film a while ago about helping, so if you would like someone to either drive you around a bit so you can look at the roads yourself or sit with you as a navigator/silent passenger, I would be happy help out and then I can pay it forward too. ...... Anyway, if I can help at all, please let me know. Think you will enjoy Dubai so much more once you are mobile x Thank you for your kind offer, if things don't work out with DH as my passenger I may take you up on that. I have visions of me throwing a tanturm and getting out the car in the style of Mrs Potato Head!! :)

I feel your pain, good luck on your first outing! Like some others here, I was forced to drive in the first week we were here, as husbad went away for work. I was in a hired Corolla, doing the journey from the DIP, round the Green Community roundabout and down to Emirates Hills. Baptism of fire! I remember in that first week that dorter was invited to a friend's in the Springs. I managed to drop her off quite happily and then failed to find my way back to the hotel in the dark, though I'd already done the journey a few times in daylight. Husbad in Jeddah not happy to receive a call from me saying "I'm lost" - what could he do! I finally realized I was going in the wrong direction up the Emirates Road and managed to turn round and get back to Springs (too late to go to the hotel first!). A year later realized I'd got myself into Motor City for some reason. After that, my husband decided it would be safer for me to drive a large automatic, as he would feel happier that way! I definitely second keeping your petrol tank full, just in case. And don't worry, I still get lost in the MoE carpark, let alone the MoE itself :) We all do it, it's a feature of Dubai, particularly as the road layouts change so fast because of their construction. As someone said, make sure you know which direction you want to be heading (Sharjah, airport, Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, Dubai) and you'll get home safely in the end:) Good luck :) oh cripes that brings back memories - my first trip to Green Community with the 2008 traffic to go to Zaks for school uniform! And trips to Zaks are a nightmare in themselves without adding in being a new driver here lol. Not knowing where a petrol station was (DH away....) - asked in the school (DBS), the woman told me the nearest was on Emirates Road towards GreenCommunity which is absolutely miles away when you're on empty, being absolutely petrified I would run out of petrol as it was running on fumes by that point! I have never done that again and fortunately there are a lot more petrol stations dotted around now!

Oh, and your DH is the polar opposite to mine! when we first arrived in Muscat he had me behind the wheel 36 hours after landing (I'm from the UK). He made me drive from the hotel we were staying in to the school and back, from the hotel to his office and back, from school to office, mall and back etc so I was familiar with everywhere, and where everything was in relation to each other. My DH is away for weeks at a time so me not driving simply isn't an .....my DH did the same...a couple of practice runs to work and school and the supermarket then i was left to it lol.... Toffeepop....the above is a great way to start by doing the practice run with someone..ive been here since Feb and been driving since mid march im from UK and ddnt venture anywhere out my comfort zone, not very confident with City driving as you obviously are..once you get your bearings and know which way is Dubai or Abu Dhabi itll be a doddle, you seem like me..my DH says Im my own worse enemy because i get so stressed before a new journey but then i manage it no problems and its like ahhhhh that was sooo easy lol..go for it :)

I think the other ladies have offered really good advice, the only thing that I would add, is how to work out in your own mind, and consult with yr DH, how to deal with anything that might happen. For example, somebody ran into the back of my car, last week while I was waiting at traffic lights, so I tried to get him to wait at the nearest easiest place to move out the traffic (years ago it was easier, as you just called the police and waited to see who was given the blame slip) Anyway, he drove off without pulling over, so I took a picture of his plate, pulled over and looked to see if there was any damage. Thankfully, there was none, so I didn't pursue it. The point I am trying to make, is that if you know what you need to do if anything does happen, it will make you more confident in having to deal with it. Anyway, if I can help at all, please let me know. Think you will enjoy Dubai so much more once you are mobile x This is such a lovely offer !

Nyranee, we must have DH's separated at birth as mine did the same, put me in 4x4 in tears and made me drive on SZR on a Friday morning - ended up storming out and having tantrum in Safa Park :D oh - forgot, don't drive on the slow lanes of SZR as too much merging in and out, try and drive on 2nd or 3rd lane in, at a good constant speed. That's so funny ... I remember actually being proud after a while on that highway that day saying, it works I drive and as an answer I got "yeah hope the police car you just undertook on the right is happy too" :D ever since I know undertaking is actually ok here ...

when i'd had my car less than two weeks we had a night out, left the car in Al Barsha and got a taxi home. Next morning we went to fetch the car - husband put "go home" in satnav and said follow me to the roundabout then i go straight (to work) and you need to go left.. i took the wrong left :D and the trip from Barsha to the Ranches took me almost 4 hours....have never lived it down but by the end i thought driving here was a pice of p**s lol Biggest problem for me was getting stuck on roundabouts - with the heavy stufff sitting on the outside lane almost all the way round it's not easy to actually get off if you're caught in the wrong lane !! Not that i'd recommend being lost for hours but you could try just driving with only a vague route - not worrying about the navigation means you can just concentrate on getting a feel for your car, the roads and the other vehicles... if you go wrong so what - don't let your fuel get much lower than half a tank and enjoy the ride :)

Darhling.... just get in the car and drive (everyone else does)! You will miss a few off-ramps (I still do). Just don't try and stop and reverse like so many *ssh*les I still see every day. Once you start, you won't look back! (no pun intended!)

- start on Beach Road - graduate to Al Wasl Road when you feel confident - graduate to Sheikh Z Road (on a Friday morning) when you have mastered AW Road. Always be aware of what is happening on each side of you and behind you. If you see someone driving aggressively behind you, move aside and let them pass. Don't ever involve yourself in slowing down on purpose to annoy them etc - get out of the situation and let it be. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED Don't ever assume that the person driving in front, beside or behind you has the same skills or driving knowledge that you do - expect the unexpected at all times and be ready to get out of any situation. Don't panic if you miss a turn. Drive to the next interchange and find your way back. Try to learn road names when you are a passenger to make your life easier as a driver. Don't rely heavily on GPS. Be confident, many accidents are caused by hesitant drivers. Indicate, see a space and move over into your lane, be confident about it. Concentrate and be aware at all times, and you'll be fine :)

Ive taken a few wrong turns and missed a few exits but you know what, it makes you a more confident driver. My first day driving here and I ended up on Emirates Road towards Sharjah whilst driving from Al Barsha to umm Suqeim :\: Ive driven in Diera, Bur Dubai and Satwa during the first few months and im fine. Just plan your journey and which route to take and get in the car and go... you will enjoy it !
