I've put on some weight over the last few months, and now find clothes shopping almost intolerable. The mirrors in the changing rooms where you can see front and back don't help - muffin tops even where they are not supposed to be are so unattractive. I am a bit at my wits end now, because I just can't find anything that looks good, I haven't bought any new clothes for months. I'm not *that* massive, size 12 to 14 (UK), but am very depressed about it as I love buying something special to go out in. Anyone else have the same problem or am I the only lardy-no-clothes on here. :(

I like going to Wallis (IBN Battuta Mall) for their "petite collection", but actually they do have more beautiful stuff in bigger sizes. Good Luck!

The thing to remember is that even if you have put on a couple kilos is that most people look at your face, hair, smile and personality! Make the effort there and absolutely avoid the shops until you are happy with your size again - shopping will be agony until then. It is also interesting to note that as per advice from the UK's 'Trinny & Susannah', it doesn't matter what size you are you need to dress for your shape. Even if you change sizes the same clothes should work for you, albiet just in a different size! I would recommend their book "the Body Shape Bible' - changed my life!!

Have you thought about having a colour analysis done? There is a lady called Janet that runs a company called House of Colour. She is based in AR. She basically gives you a full overhaul of your wardrobe and makeup you are wearing. She recommends colours that suit you and categorises you as a season, such as Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter. The good thing is she also has gorgeous clothes to flatter all shapes and sizes. I'm a summer (colour wise) and since my confidence has soared as I know what suits me and my shape. I'm a UK size 20, so know how frustrating clothes shopping is! Janet has a stall at ARTE (on today from midday at Time Square), if you can, go and see her. She'll be able to give you a good description of what she can offer. She's very popular and comes highly recommended. https://www.facebook.com/houseofcolourdubai edited by Zannie on 09/03/2012

To be fair, I was a 6 before my a$$ arrived- I think it was Kim K's old one ;) Couldn't hope to get into a 6 now... darn childbearing hips... and I don't even want kids! Waste! :P

SkyKitty, Im with you all the way. My size hasn't really changed over the years - if my clothes start feeling uncomfortable to wear I put on the brakes and skip on the fizzy beverages and the calorie loaded meals for a week . I find the sizes really do vary between stores - Im a Size 12 who has got into an M and S 10 comfortablly but have had to resort to a 16 when shopping elsewhere when something has caught my eye !

oooh, I've been here. The best advice given to me by an exquisite and beautiful friend of mine has stuck with me through thick and thin--literally--so I'll pass it to you! No matter what your body shape or size is today, always dress up the best you can in clothes that fit, take the extra time with your skin, your hair, your makeup--and feel beautiful on this day! But back to what to wear--sounds like you have some great advice on places to check out! I have a few tops from Bebe that are blousy, and I like to wear those when I am feeling not so slim. I had to just pick a day to hit the mall, pound the pavement, and suffer through the mirrors and what-not, in order to come up with a few pieces. Building a wardrobe takes time--it is hard for even slim gals to find the right stuff in one day. Good luck with your shopping and try to enjoy it :) I've had times where weight crept up on me, and I had to try and scavenge some duds with practically no money. It can always be worse! edited by Beebers on 08/03/2012

Yay! Happy shopping, I hope you find something fab. When all else fails.....shoes! I've been taking that advice rather too literally over the last few months, I don't think I can fit any more shoes in my cupboard!!!!

Thanks again, some good ideas, and I do have some outfits I love, so maybe I will just go and get them copied as you say! I know it's just a number, but even if I cut the size label off, I will still know I've turned into a lardy cow, lol!! Anyway, I feel much more positive and will have another go tomorrow. Thanks all!!

Like SkyKitty I am an hourglass... I am curvy and have a smaller waist and larger hips, I know this and have learnt to embrace it and dress for my shape. This is mostly done in A-line skirts, fitted tee's or a singlet with cardy. I get skirts made and buy tops and nice flats at Zara, H&M, etc. Anyway enough about ME, the point is, find something in your wardrobe that you feel FABULOUS in and go to a tailor and get it copied 5 times :) You will look better in fitted clothes and feel great, plus you aren't wearing the same things as half of the expats in C4! The best thing is there's no number attached to it, it's just You, life's too short to live by a number anyway :)

Betty b, when I moved to London in my early twenties I decided to ditch the fitness and eating regime for chips and beer. Four months and 16kgs later I decided it maybe wasn't a good idea. It took a lot longer than 4 months to lose the weight!

I've just had a friend over who is the same dress size as you and after a few happy days trawling the shops she decided that Koton was her favourite in terms of style and fit. She got a dress with birds on it from there that looked amazing. I'm with Freckly, I'm a size 6 and find shop mirrors vile. When I was a size 14 - 16 I'd avoid looking in them. Size 6- Wow, even my feet arent that small ;) I like coton too and they have tops which are long, as im a freakishly long bodied person....and 'child bearing hips' thrown in there too..... Quite a mix and a nightmare to find stuff! :( I did get some great work pants from GAP recently!

Re jane Norman, Im only JUST getting to a S16 but in January I fitted in a size 14 of her dresses and was over the moon and the dressk looked great! So if you see a dress in that shop just go in and try it on, you never know and they are not hugely expensive!!! It must of been the cut as i tried on a size 12 and a size 14 dress and it was skin tight? Maybe I won't try Jane Norman then, hehe! Dress sizes are bonkers. In some i can be a 10 others a 14... go figure

I would avoid Coast as i find their sizing small. marks is good, as are Oasis and also Top shop- their sizes are what they say. Next is also good for 'correct' sizing! Chin up- those mirrors dont flatter ANYONE! And none of us go shopping with hair coiffed and full makeup on...Well i don't. :-)

The best thing I ever tried was a tailor... as a traditional "hourglass" I seriously cannot find anything to fit me very often- either it fits the hips and too big in the waist, or fits the bottom but I don't have enough to fill out the top.... If you LOVE something and it looks nice pinned (ask the shopgirl for pins/pegs- lots hae them) the it might just need a teeny alteration or two.

Thanks all, makes me feel I'm not the only one! Love your story Jesspm, have never looked in there, so may have a browse! Coast stuff can be ok, but I've got big boobs, so if it fits on top, it's far too big on bottom and vice versa. Generally it's not that I can't find clothes to fit - it's just that they look awful on me! And yes, I know if I lose weight it won't be so bad, and I'm trying, but I can't stay in for the next few months whilst I'm doing it! Freckly, thank god someone else thinks those mirrors are the pits ;)

I am a 14-16 and recently walked past Jane Norman and saw a gorgeous figure-8 navy dress in the shop window, very figure hugging. This is what happened: Me: ooooo beautiful dress! DH: yes, you'd have to be a size 8 to pull that off! (keeps walking) Me: (starts to walk but then turns...) Let's see DH: (carrying all the bags now and delayed going to carrefour) Me: I think i'll try the navy and the black They look great, I'm bouncing around the shop, get to the till and there is a size 8 woman with legs up to her armpits returning the dress as it didn't sit right on her but she said it looked great on me. Very happily wore it to dinner last week, turned a few heads, and almost passed out with the 2 pairs of 'pull-me-in-panties' i was wearing to hide the muffin tops! So, Moral of the Story, the DH will never make that comment again, and Jane Norman is complimentary to the curvier woman!
