Just realized my driving license has expired...will I get into trouble (fines) for not renewing on time?

Has anyone renewed their licence lately? Dh100 for an eye test sound steep. Can it be done cheaper anywhere? Can the eye test be done at the Al Manara Municipality?

Renewed my driving licence at Al Manara Municipality in July 2012. Paid Dhs100 for eye test (took less than 5 mins) which is a ripe off, I think. Result of eye test is then sent to RTA online by optical shop. Apparently, not all optical shops are allowed to provide this service, so do check first. UAE ID is required for licence renewal. I must comment that the whole renewal process at Al Manara Municipality was quick!!

Took some searching but found this: http://www.rta.ae/wpsv5/wps/portal/rta/how-do-i/road-users/license/!ut/p/c5/jZDLboJAAEW_xQ8wMzwksBwYERQBSwRmNmSgA7XKs0gLX18attX23uXJTW4OoGBuxYZLwfpLXbEbiAFVEme39T1oKoK381Rob0LRl6AtyQd55kRJINwETqgeVAwNMXQFUZbgkv-tfw_6a70HtLjV6fwywqTRcX0qMMK53JpWw1-1kbc9MwW7wKTXm3VSGYyWqWH5eXS3IEbHjEVEE7yW6IOTQV3gAXtjbkfux-YLt-EY8Cg3ahqe1tb5qnVpx7eOgvYxH95TW59kTrKx1GjSix_phFYg-rH38LFnys-5qyz8mc2FP_TlWnXJQcAr0JTneOLXF-sTrb4BBMmbJg!!/dl3/d3/L2dJQSEvUUt3QS9ZQnZ3LzZfTEdFUE8wRjYxT0dPODBJNVYyUDMwSTNPVjc!/ Don't know if the ID requirement now extends to all people as there is no date on the information.

Has anyone done this at Union Coop recently? Is this info still correct? Can you do it at the Manara Municipality Centre? Thanks.. The Coop office closed. Once u get eye test u can complete in most opticians now the whole process. Call RTA and check which ones. Will save going to 2 places. Otherwise u can go to Manara or online or over the phone. Good luck edited by Missymoo on 10/09/2012

Mine has expired too, its not compulsory to have a drivers license in Dubai so there are no fines. The police said I just need to get an eye test done from any optiician then take the test, passport and visa copy to the traffic centre to renew the license. you can be fined for not having a drivers licence, look on the rules it may be like 200dhs for not producing correct documentation etc. its easy to renew nowadays, but doubt they will fine you much if at all.

em2san, thanks for your detailed helpful paragraph. My licence will expire in 2 weeks so I want to get it done asap. Is the RTA office at al wasl still relevant and how much is the eye test? is the eye test at an optician there or AT the RTA office? Is it advisable to do it there or is the eye test cheaper somewhere else? Any other hints? I hope all this applies as my licence is from Sharjah but we lived in Dubai (and have visa) since ca 10 years) Thanks

If your license has expired the insurance will not be valid, and they consider it the same as having no license. Technically, it is the same.

I didn't know but if you have an accident the police will fine you (Dhs600) I learned this when I went to renovate my license and by the way, it was really easy and hassle free, just like em2san said, but Dhs600 for an accident?!

Union Co-op near Safa Park is definitely the best for car renewal. Its so stress free. On the ground floor, they have a photo place. I got my picture taken there and then went to the opticians (on the same floor) with my passport copy, visa copy and picture. They did my eye test and stamped my documents and picture. Then I went to the first floor for the RTA office. They had a very small line over there - no more than 10 mins wait. Then I put in the request for the license renewal and made the payment. Then they called me to a little cubicle in the corner where they have a mirror and the guy asked me if I wanted to fix myself up (make up retouch, etc) then he took a picture with the digital camera and the guy is so nice, he let me look at the picture and when I didn't like it, then he took another picture. 5 minutes wait for the printing of the license and I was a legally driving citizen again :)

You can take a passport photo if you want to change yours (mine was 10 years old and v outdated) or they will just use the old one.

@melbell, Yes, that's all you need. If you have any fines you have to pay those before you can renew your licence.

if the process is the same for dxb as ad as i have renewed my licence a few years ago, you just need to do the eye test and the paperwork again simple.

Sorry I should rephrase my post, yes you MUST have a drivers license to drive a car in Dubai unless you are a visitor and a hire a car, what I meant is that you dont need a drivers license for just being a resident of Dubai but if you choose to drive then you must have the license.

It is compulsory to have a driving license if you're driving in Dubai. The rta is very lenient about renewing expired licenses [specially those who have a 10 year license cause hey! nobody can keep track that long'> and don't levy any fines. However if the police stops you for suspicious activity or you are in an accident and get the "red slip" [indicating that you were the one at fault'>, you will get an AED 400 fine for not presenting your documents/carrying expired documents. Hope that helps.

The authorities are fairly lenient when you renew a newly expired licence; however, there a fine is levied if you are caught driving with an expired document... The process of renewing is very easy and swift, as melbell writes!
