Hi, going to visit Karama tomorrow for some handbag shopping. Is it only good there for fakes or real leather non branded bags as well? Any other bargains to be had in Karama? Any shop suggestions? - have no idea where to start. TIA

Nice so are you all now going to openly name the shops partaking in illegal counterfeiting? Well done *slow clap* Haha everyone knows what shops sell dodgy goods, the police just raid them now and again ......karama doesn't exactly hide the goods very well....

The businesses concerned don't exactly cover up what they're doing though. Many of them have their counterfeit goods on open display. I doubt this thread highlights anything the authorities don't already know as all anyone has to do is walk around and feign interest.

My suggestion if you haven't been is to get someone who knows the place to take you; I'm not sure how easy it would be to get access to the secret rooms / apartments where all the better stuff is kept if they don't know you. Likewise, not sure I comfortable I'd feel heading off with a stranger on my own!! So get a couple of girlfriends who know the ropes and make a fun evening of it. Dinner at Karachi Darbar is divine by the way :)

So some of you can spot a fake every time? Sorry don't believe it. Where do you think many of these real bags are made...Paris? Italy? Er no, China and other Asian countries because of the cheap labour. A lot of these fakes are made in the SAME factories as the real ones in these countries, so they are essentially the SAME product but yes they are illegal as they are not being sold by the proprietor who has the copyright. Same materials, same workers, but because of the corruption numbers of them 'somehow' do not make it into the inventory. Yes many fakes are garbage **** quality but I have seen some amazing copies and even holding an original next to it and inspecting it very closely (down to the colour of the stitching in the lining etc.) and you could not tell the difference. oh yeah, there r amazing fakes (sometimes called "C1"). But they r not sooo much cheap, so say good fake LV may cost ar real dkny or even more.

that sounds really sweet - to have fake bag for 10% of the price of the real one... when I was 18-20 yo I've been bying such stuff. And there were really good fakes (donno why but usually the best fakes r LV) and cheap ones - looked good on the photo but not so good in real life. Guess I would buy fake one but really good one (and usually good cost 50-60% of the original's price). At the moment I'm happy with furla and dkny... also some original LV and chanel but will visit karama cos got curious now ;) edited by AnnaA on 25/05/2011

Had a friend being stopped by customs in the Netherlands. He had a fake Rolex on his wrist, but had put the boxes in his suitcase. Customs wanted him to declare the watch and pay taxes on it. When he explained that it was a fake (and you're allowed to bring in a certain amount or value of fakes in the Netherlands), they had another good look. Still customs declared it a real one. Our friend was, of course, really persistent that it was a fake one from Karama. Customs brought in jeweller from well-known jewelly store in Holland, he looked at watch and also declared it a real one. Only after a phone call to Rolex to check the serial number, they found out it really was a fake one :)

Some might say that feeling superior because you are able to afford something that others aren't able to is tacky. Others might say that calling others tacky and looking down your nose at them for wearing Primark is tacky. See? Very subjective indeed............ *double like* your explanation :D

Just thought I'd add that Janvin in Karama do good quality and are usually reasonable prices. I pay from 200 aed for a clutch to between 270-500 aed for a bag. They have a good choice in their main store and have more choice if you ask! Also, I have travelled frequently with my fakes and have never been questioned about them. Enjoy.

I have bought 2 or maybe 3 fake bags and never ended up using them. If u r used to carrying originals, the fake look & feel really fake. But each to their own. I don’t care if a bag is fake or real if I like it , I like it. Ive got real Hermes bags and fake ones so what ! I even got stopped at customs in the UK and the guy was more interested if I had brought food into the UK from Dubai than what handbag was on my arm (it was the fake by the way) so they can’t spot them a mile off.

Some of us buy our own, and some of us make our own decsions on where we shop. In fact some of our husbands might have even come with us on occasion and gone gaga over a watch! my DH was looking at the rolex watches for his parents. Lets just say they probably never went beyond a Timex before. Pretty snazzy wearing rolex with runners. Apparently MIL's watch wasn't keeping time properly. She took it into one of the high end jewelry stores back home and they refused to touch it. Not because it was a fake but to them it was a real rolex. I would think a high end jeweler could tell the difference. MIL even asked if they were sure it wasn't a fake and they pointed out why it wasn't one. I thought everything in karama were fakes.

Ahh the good 'ol Karama threads. How bout those who are against fake goods and against Karama just not open these threads, huh? Leave the Karama shoppers to enjoy it without the lectures.

[b'>[i'>[/i'>Well if the bags these ladies are talking about are as good as they say I find it fairy difficult to imagine being stopped at an EU border because of my handbag.[/i'>[/b'> You may not be stopped entering the EU, but you might and oh how shameful as well as illegal. I can spot a fake handbag from across a room and so can the customs staff at CDG. They are trained how to. I find anything where you have to scurry into back rooms and apartments to purchase an illegal item very unsavoury and my husband would be horrified to hear of me doing that no matter how much money it would save him. Be careful of yourselves in these places, its just not smart heading into apartments with strange men to buy illegal goods. I know Dubai is safe but its not worth it for a fake bag. edited by Ilovechoos on 25/05/2011
