Just read on Emirates 24/7 it is not reopening until the end of 2016! It will never reopen. Guaranteed. Or it will reopen like JBR did - with a big mall in front of it.

So apparently only temporary (well, for more than a year, but eventually reopening): http://7daysindubai.com/dubais-jumeirah-beach-park-closed-year/

My husband says it reminds him of what happened in Brisbane a few years ago - ruined the beaches entirely with too much building. Oh, I'm sure they'll try and squeeze every last dirham and fil out of the beaches here. Nothing will be left for those who, as others have pointed out, actually make Dubai work, but who can't afford to visit beach clubs or that sort of thing. edited by Madge_Gustard on 13/10/2014

Very sad. But the majority of residents don't actually use the beaches, do they? You don't see too many emirati women and children hanging out there do you? I'm using "residents" in the general sense of "people residing somewhere" (on the basis that the document in all our passports that allows us to live here is called a "Residence Permit"). Anything from 85-90% of residents of Dubai are not Emirati. That's an entirely different issue, of course. edited by Madge_Gustard on 13/10/2014 But unfortunately the people in charge are and I guess that's why they don't see the value in it. Actually that was the great thing about Open Beach. Tons of Emirati families at beach early in the morning; groups of local kids playing football, elderly Emiratis going for morning walks. And all the rest Filipinos, Indians having a really great time playing football, Volleyball, picnicking etc, on their only day off . Hardly any tourists. That walking track is heavily used on the weekends and in the early morning hours. A true beach for "locals"- Emirati and non Emirati.

Any opportunities to build more beachfront/waterfront properties that will only be affordable by a tiny percentage of Dubai residents will always trump any consideration of the needs or desires of the vast majority who earn 3000 AED per month or less (often a lot less). Sad but true. Very sad. But the majority of residents don't actually use the beaches, do they? You don't see too many emirati women and children hanging out there do you?

I heard that the Archive has offered to pick you up in a buggy if you call them, not sure from which gate. I would call and find out, because a quiet spot to read is rare. That is a cool idea - I know loads of lovely quiet places, esp mid day mid week to visit - Citywalk for example

Staff at The Archive told me they have about 10 customers a day max so if you're looking for a quiet place to work, that's probably it ;) That does not surprise me at all, I am actually surprised they are even open - we tried to go a few weeks back and gave up finding a gate that was open around there so that we could go in!

Went to Safa Park 2 weeks ago and Gates 1, 2 were open, all other gates were closed. The Archive is open. If you want to get there from Gate 2 you need to walk straight to the lake, turn right towards the Mosque and then walk all the way straight into SZR direction. No shortcuts or straight pathways because all the interior is closed/fenced off. I don't know, is it? The gate 1 side is open, the gate 5 is closed but thought the Archives café is still up and running? or not any longer?

Isn't Safa Park half closed now anyways - The Russian? I had heard a rumour that the Dubai Marine Resort was going to do a major refurb, maybe that has been delayed to tie in with when the beach closes - so the whole area is under development at the same time

Hearbreaking. You see all sorts on the running path there, walking and running and chatting. I agree about all the beaches going. Also noticed parking metres going up so everywhere will be paid parking. I saw the boards going up last week and assumed it was an extension to the car park..alas no. what I find hard is that they promised us a 14k promenade and then boom, they have taken loads of it away. ;-(

Sue do you mean the beach next to marine beach resort is going? There is a small cycle path there too? I thought the new corniche was going to run from the flagpole to burj... It's all so confusing and so sad.. Noticed a lot of work going on at various points along the beach. Adding sand and protecting the beach. Is this all the palm/new islands that are causing more beach erosion? Yes, the beach next to marine beach resort. If you look at the plans and if you go down there and see where the boards are quickly going up, it looks like the entire length of the cycle path is going to be gone. Now maybe they will keep the cycle and running path- hard to say , but if you look at the plans it is all commercial. And the boardings are going up between the road/houses and the cycle path so access is going to be cut off soon it would appear. I cannot imagine the locals with ocean facing homes are going to be thrilled, boardings going up right in front of them too. It is very sad. Greed. Harder for those of us who remembered it before any developments on the beach. The remaining beaches are going to be terribly overcrowded with Jumeirah open beach and Jumeirah beach park closing. And most have no showers or toilets either. In fact, I am not sure if Dubai Marine Beach Resort will survive this either, hard to tell from the plans, but it is in between the Pearl and the new development, so I suspect it's days are numbered too. edited by Sue on 13/10/2014 edited by Sue on 13/10/2014

Speaking of beaches, anyone know what they are doing to JBR beach? We were at Royal Meridien yesterday and half their beach plus adjoining beach in front of Ritz were blocked off and sand was being dredged and taken away by barge. Notice on barricades said redevelopment of entire JBR beach is being undertaken but no details. http://arabianindustry.com/hospitality/news/2014/sep/21/meraas-launches-mixed-use-dubai-beach-development-4822558/#.VDp6W1IcS1s There is one above too but I don't know where the Pearl will be? The Pearl is being built right beside the port down by Jumeirah Mosque. The Meraas project is going to take away the entire open beach and the running and cycling track- from the One all the way to across from the Zoo. They are boarding it up as we speak. Besides this going and Jumeirah Beach park going there is going to be so little left for the people who work to make Dubai what it is . Both these places are busy on Friday and Saturday am's - as early as 530 am with people running, swimming, having picnics- people that cannot afford beach clubs or to drive anywhere. The running and cycling track is popular too with a lot of Emiratis as well. All of this, along with the upcoming loss of sunset beach surfing is so upsetting. It reminds me every day I am down there lately of that line in that song that goes "they pave paradise and put up a parking lot". Dubai is so horrible compared to 10 years ago. edited by Sue on 12/10/2014 edited by Sue on 12/10/2014

About two weeks ago, the beach was "closed" between Hilton and Meydan Club. Looks like they dredged to extend the sand roughly 15M. (Can't really tell from my balcony but that's close). It is now open again there. Now they have shifted to the Ritz area and Le Royal, like you said. Maybe another week or so, should be back open again.
