Hi Mums, we have been offered a place for our daughter at JPS for Sept 2015, she is an August baby so will be youngest in the year and the 7.30 start is a worry too. Very stressed as I know if I keep her in nursery for FS1 she will miss out as FS 2 in most schools is so hard to get. Any thoughts or experiences of JPS would be welcome. Thanks. Hello Mummycurve1, my son currently attends FS1 at JPS but he is one of the oldest (November born). He partly did FS1 in the nursery as they moved him as soon as he turned 3. When he started at JPS, my worry was actually the opposite of yours, which is, maybe he will be bored. My fear was confirmed when during the first few weeks, he comes home and complains that school is boring. It was further confirmed by his teacher during the first parent-teacher meeting that he is in the advance side and that she will arrange for him to have more interaction with older kids. On the other hand, since the school is more structured than the nursery environment, the kids adapt to this new system. Kids adapt. I would want to believe that if the assessment of your child didn't go well, JPS will surely not offer her a place. I had seen children during the assessment of my son, who had been outright send out and you know that they will not be offered a place. They could "probably" somehow know when the child is ready. However, you as a mum, would definitely know what is best for your child. Please follow what your mummy instinct is telling you. All the best x

My son has been on the JPS waiting list for over 3 years now! Looking for a Year 5 Place now. My older son is at JC but JPS say there is no sibling policy between the 2 schools.... Are you sure you are on the waiting list? A new work colleague who just arrived in Dubai got both her kids into JPS beginning October. No waiting at all. She just applied and they called her a few days later and offered a place for both of her kids.

To echo what some other mums have said, my personal opinion is that at just 3 kids are too young to be in a school environment with everything that entails. Additionally, I believe the KHDA guidelines issued last year are that children should be 3 yrs and 8 months when they start school. GEMS are notorious for ignoring all that; our DD is an early September baby who would have made the GEMS cutoff and could have been accepted for FS1 in September 2015; however, no other reputable school in Dubai (and I have contacted at least 10 and asked this question) would accept her in 2015 as they consider her too young. Frankly I am glad this is the case; someone said a year doesn't make a huge difference and that you're just delaying the inevitable but I disagree. A year for such young children makes a huge difference...even a few months make a difference. If you are really keen on JPS perhaps you could ask whether they could defer the entry to 2016 seeing as your child will have just turned 3? Good luck in any case, I know it's a very difficult decision to make.

You will find space if you wait one more year. Dont worry. Dont fall for all the paranoia that FS2 places are hard to find. Too many schools now and some of them arent even full yet.

Completely agree on the challenges of starting at. 7.30am, it was the main reason we were having second thoughts about JPS, however we struggled to find any school that started much later than that! Most of the schools I checked were all around the same time, would be great to hear of any school which starts any later than 8? I only came across DBS - 8 am - however their assessments don't start until January and I know Wellington international starts at 8.30 for FS1 and FS2 although it seems like the chances of getting in are slim. Thanks!

I am with Asti on this, school places are not as hard to find now, I would wait another year. Also the social aspects of having a little one start school at 7.30am are not great. I could never put my child into bed at 6pm or 6.30pm - they would never see their father. I am sure you will find a great school whenever you decide she's ready to go. edited by Ilovechoos on 14/11/2014

I would wait if I were you...FS2 places arent that hard to come by anymore due to the amount of new schools that have opened up all over Dubai. Also many existing schools have added extra classes to their schools. Let your August baby stay baby for a little while longer. ;)

OMG! So glad to find so many JPS mums on here! I have the same story. Applied 1st oct , assessment on 26th and offer on the 5th. We've accepted it . My girl is a October baby. So she will turn 4 next year in October. She is going to nursery at the moment. She started nursery only this September. She's toilet trained already but the nursery staff are helping the mds learn how to dress and undress. Offcourse they are assisted but they do encourage kids to do it themselves. Picking up from that I've started asking her to pull up her own pants... Put on socks n shoes .... Undress herself etc. I am also now askig her to dry herself with a tissue once she has used the toilet. Offcourse I supervise and do it if she doesn't want to but just trying to get her into the flow. As for the timings ...7.30 doesn't bother me a lot. It just means a earlie bed time. Right now my daughter goes to bed between 7pm & 8pm and wakes up 6.30am. 7.30am school means she needs to be in bed by 6pm. I would say take the spot if u feel right otherwise let her go to a nursery. Hopefully u will get a place for FS2

Thanks Emad75 it is a case of trying to delay what we would have to do the next year anyway. I feel lucky to have been offered the place it's just I have also read opinions saying they would steer clear of gems managed schools and that the class sizes are large in comparison to some other highly rated schools. Well we have to decide on Sunday and I am sure we will accept and hopefully all the worrying will have been in vain.

Hi Mummycurve1, I was also worried about JPS' start time. We have also been offered a place for FS1 starting in September 2015. After much thinking we decided to accept the place. JPS is a great school and we feel lucky we got a place. We also realised that most schools start around the same time so putting him in nursery for FS1 would just delay 1 year the inevitable! Just bumping up cause I'm also interested to hear from current FS1 mums and what's their routine like! Also how's the school drop off? I hear horror stories about traffic around the schools at drop off and pick up times!

Congratulations on all the mums above whose kids got accepted from JPS. May I ask you were your kids in gems little international nursery? Or you were just waiting till JPS opened up for your kids year group? I am wondering if I should send my boy to gems nursery to have priority to go to JPS. Do you think it's worth of it? Thank you!

My DS has also been offered at JPS and we have accepted.. he is a May baby so not as young as yours but still one of the youngest... i know they say about them being able to dress themselves etc... but i know they are helped... they do need to be potty trained for sure but they will be helped. i would rather my DS stay at nursery to do FS1 as i feel they are too young but i dont want to risk it personally. he is 2 years 6 months and not yet potty trained. a friend of mine's son is an august baby too- he is currently doing FS1 at nursery and will join JPS in September 2015 to do another year in FS1- this could be an option? ilovewine- i thought it was going to be hard also but JPS only opened their waiting list on 1st october and have turned it round really quick which most schools dont do.. they have has so many children who did great at their assesments that they have had to turn down so i do feel very lucky and happy. edited by Mrsg1 on 13/11/2014

yeah, they are quite strict about that. i have a friend who teaches and she explained to us how difficult it is to have a child in her class that is not toilet trained, so i sort of get it now. to give you an idea - DS is 2yrs 10mnths now, is fully toilet-trained and can pull down/up pants. that's about it. a t-shirt gets to his head and he'll walk around bumping into furniture because he cant get it back on or completely off :D if he doesnt master that by september 2015, he doesnt deserve a place in any school!

Thanks ilovewine, it's very difficult to know what to do and so much pressure is put onto us that if FS1 is missed FS2 will be impossible to get into. It's good to know your friends found places easily however I know if I don't take this spot now I am unlikely to be offered FS2 in the future by JPS. The fee structure is fair and the reputation is good it's the whole toilet and getting changed independently I have a concern about as she will literally have just turned 3. I am hoping to get a post from someone who's child is in FS1 and see how they have coped with it.

Hi Mummycurve1, our DS has also just been offered a place for Sept 2015 (FS1). We picked JPS - and are very happy to have a place - because my husband's children were in JPS a couple of years ago. The school has a really good reputation and we saw fantastic results with hubby's kids. DS is a January baby so he'll be a good age when he starts - no worry for us there. To be honest, if I knew getting a place for FS1 was going to be so easy, I would not have stressed so much. I think (and this is just my opinion for which, I am sure, I will be shot down & lynched) that you will definitely be able to find a place for her in FS2. As an example, I have 3 colleagues - 1 who was just being lazy and couldnt be bothered looking for school places LOL - and 2 who only recently arrived in Dubai - who have all found places - relatively easily - for FS2. Our company do not do debentures so they didnt have that advantage either. Good luck!
