Do you wash minced meat?

Another quick question! My MIL saw me washing beef mince the other day and said that she's never washed mince as it reduces the flavour. I wash mince and then leave it in a colander to drain. Am I doing this wrong?
TIA!

Thanks everyone for all the replies and the laughs! Won't be washing my mince from now on! To answer some of the questions here- yes it does get VERY messy and some of it goes through the holes in the colander. I've been thinking better waste a little waste than catch a stomach bug. DUH! And it never tastes as good as...well...as mince is supposed to taste but I just put it down to me not adding the correct amount of flavouring. Its a good thing I haven't been cooking that long. And because my mince never tastes that good anyway, I haven't cooked it too often. This has been a timely intervention!

No mince washing! What I do here though is to get a nice piece of topside or any other nice meat from the shelf, ask the guy to mince it in front of my eyes and pack it also in front of my eyes...I know then that I have a good tray of mince without anything added.... Yep, me too. Ask for Topside! Sometimes I mince my own and use Omaha Fillet Steak.....it is the only way I can be sure to get the best.

Rinising it with water will not remove any bacteria. You would need to wash it with disinfefctant to remove and kill any bacteria. Personally, I LOVE the taste of Domestos on my horsey burgers ;-p

I have never heard of anyone washing minced meat. I don't even want to imagine the texture the meat would have after (yuck). Also, no one should be washing any meat... "Washing raw poultry, beef, pork, lamb, or veal before cooking it is not recommended. Bacteria in raw meat and poultry juices can be spread to other foods, utensils, and surfaces. We call this cross-contamination. Some consumers think they are removing bacteria and making their meat or poultry safe. However, some of the bacteria are so tightly attached that you could not remove them no matter how many times you washed. But there are other types of bacteria that can be easily washed off and splashed on the surfaces of your kitchen. Failure to clean these contaminated areas can lead to foodborne illness. Cooking (baking, broiling, boiling, and grilling) to the right temperature kills the bacteria, so washing food is not necessary. " more here: http://www.fsis.usda.gov/FACTSheets/Does_Washing_Food_Promote_Food_Safety/index.asp HTH :)

I also wash all meat - red including mince, poultry, fish before preparing it. I don't soak it, just rinse it quickly. I don't know why - my grandmother did and my mother, also. I guess it is a learnt behaviour. [u'>http://www.snopes.com/weddings/newlywed/secret.asp[/u'>

I do, but only a quick rinse in cold water. Not so much that it goes all white and mushy though.....what would be the point of eating red meat then :)
