Cant decide if i like them! Usually live in flip flops but these look like they give more support...verdict? Those of you who loke them, are they comfy to wear all day? Thanks!

I never wear open shoes but I think the new style Birkenstocks are not that bad. And to be honest if they are the best for your feet, go for it. I don't really care what others think of what I wear, if I am happy then like it or lump it lol (expression learned on EW). It's all down to taste, wear what makes you happy and forget about everyone else:)

I read today in the paper that Crocs have seen their sales drop by 41 percent.

Nasty worse than Crocs ;-) Okay, usually I always agree with you -- but not this time, I have to say, they're both godawful, but there is nothing is uglier than Crocs! :-) edited by amkcbrandon on 13/08/2013 *like* Crocs are THE ugliest things on the planet! I've had a few issues with sprained ankles and when I turned up for my first appointment at the physioptherapist wearing Birkies, he was pleased, and recommended putting them on as soon as I got up each day, and wearing them as much as poss, as they offered the best level of cradling and support for the feet. They have such a large range now, of all colours and cute designs, not just the nasty ones :) Still don't agree, even with colours and designs still ugly ;-) however each to their own :-)

Is it just me or do these sandals look exactly like the early style of Scholl sandals? I wore these sandals in the 70s and some of the Birkenstock sandals look almost identical. Some had wooden soles but others had leather ones even then. I too, wear shoes for comfort and don't have the prettiest feet due to surgical scars and other issues but I'm afraid I still wear sandals in the summer to keep my feet cool. We can't all have beautiful feet even with our best efforts ;) I remember my Mum wore scholls, my Sister got a whack on the bum with them many years ago ;-) Yep, I lived in mine while my kids were little. They were very handy for whacking wee bums :D

What is it about Canadians and ugly shoes. I have a friend who wears the ugliest pair of shoes I have EVER seen. They are huge black leather clog - very clumpy and ugly and she wears them with dresses.!!! They were very expensive, some kind of specialist brand and she swears they are the best thing she has ever worn. But as much as I love my comfort I would not even have them sitting discarded at the bottom of the wardrobe never mind on my feet. Are the Danskos?

Yes they are not very attractive ! BUT you can walk for miles in them. i have silver ones, and feel that is a compromise to style !! also very good for dropped arches, and all that stuff.

Ugly, hideous things - especially worn with socks! Who does that? Canadians! Especially those living in more rural parts of the country, the university crowd and outdoorsy types (a large segment of Canada). Not the most attractive look, but it's super-comfy and you know the thing about fashion is that your eyes tend to get used to whatever the majority is wearing. So if that's plaid shirts, thick wool sweaters and birks + socks, then so be it, as long as it's warm and comfortable :) OMG do you have a picture of me?..:):):) In the winter outside I swop them for my fluffy lined wellies. edited by Nomad on 10/08/2013

Genie and OP, after looking at the pairs in this article... thank you flipboard! They can be nice. http://m.vogue.com/vogue-daily/article/pretty-ugly-why-vogue-girls-have-fallen-for-the-birkenstock/ The ones my friend was wearing were like the silver pair only a very pretty turquoise colour and slightly shinier - the effect was nice. Might have to investigate these :)

I shocked myself yesterday by seeing a pair of Birkenstocks and thinking they looked pretty! I have always thought they were ugly - especially the sandy/ beige coloured ones that are all straps and buckles. I met a friend yesterday who was wearing a turquoise, patent leather (or something like)pair of the style that goes between the toes ( a la fit flop / flip flops) her toes nails were painted the same colour and the look was pretty. Previously I have always thought that even if they feel like you are walking on clouds and angels wings I would not wear them, not so sure now though... What is it about Canadians and ugly shoes. I have a friend who wears the ugliest pair of shoes I have EVER seen. They are huge black leather clog - very clumpy and ugly and she wears them with dresses.!!! I get leg pain if I walk for long in normal flip flops... I've tried Birkenstocks and Fit Flops and they are both great! Fit Flops saved me when I was in New York one year! I've currently got some croc flip flops and they are great too...plus they are non slip too! Try the more slim line Birkenstock flip flops and have pretty nails done and be glad you are comfy :) You get quite pretty fit flops with sequins or jewels on if you want something a bit prettier. Comfort over fashion works at the end of the day!

Everyone should have at least one pair of shoes to wear on long walks. Granted, Birkenstocks are kind of ugly, but if you can walk in them all day pain-free, you owe them to yourself.

Beware - everyone who is now decrying Birkenstocks that you do not get multiple sprained ankles - as I have got through the years of wearing high heels - tripping over on uneven surfaces, falling down stairs many times etc. - you'll be grateful for anything that stops more sprains and is vaguely good for your feet even if they look like boats! You never really get completely over very bad ankle sprains! These days I can hardly stop myself goiing up to girls in high heels and lecturing them!
